Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera became the first player in 45 years to win the Triple Crown this season, and he is likely to win the American League MVP award when that's announced next month. But first things first: could Cabrera win a World Series MVP? He is the 5-1 favorite to do so at Bovada. Cabrera's Tigers would almost certainly have to beat the San Francisco Giants in the series -- Detroit is a -180 favorite -- for Cabrera to bring home the MVP. Only one player has won the award while playing on a losing team, as New York Yankees shortstop Bobby Richardson did so in 1960 when the Yankees lost in seven games to Pittsburgh on Bill Mazeroski's Game 7 home run. After leading the AL with a .330 average, 44 homers and 139 RBIs during the season, Cabrera is hitting .278 with one homer and five RBIs in nine playoff games so far. He had at least one hit in all four games of the ALCS and at least one RBI in the final three games. Hall of Fame...

Verlander's Series struggles return against Giants in Game 1

SAN FRANCISCO -- Seven years later, it was the same result for Justin Verlander. The Detroit Tigers right-hander lasted just four innings and took the loss Wednesday night as the San Francisco Giants rolled to an 8-3 victory behind Pablo Sandoval's three home runs in Game 1 of the World Series at AT&T Park. Two of Sandoval's three home runs came off Verlander as he...

The Detroit Tigers record in game two of the Fall Classic

After a stunning and somewhat shocking defeat to the San Francisco Giants, who pounded Tigers ace Justin Verlander for five runs on six hits in just four innings pitched last night. We turn our attention to Game two of the Fall Classic to be played tonight in California. It was game two in 2006 that SP Kenny Rogers led the Tigers to their only victory over the St. Louis Cardinals...

Poll: Who will win the 2012 World Series?

The 2012 World Series gets underway tonight in San Francisco with Justin Verlander and Barry Zito taking the mound for the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants. The Tigers have taken the American League by storm after being out of the playoff picture with two weeks remaining in the season. The Giants have played much of the Postseason with their backs to the wall, rallying from...

Tigers at Giants: World Series Game 1 preview

It’s fitting that Giants catcher Buster Posey won the NL Comeback Player of the Year award on Tuesday. His team has been the epitome of the comeback kids, digging themselves out of one gargantuan hole after another in the NLDS and LCS. Just the same, I’m sure Giants skipper Bruce Bochy would prefer his squad just go ahead and win Game One of the  2012 World Series, which begins...

Obey Our New Panda Overlords

Baseball has apparently been taken over, "conquered" if you will, by a master race of giant space pandas. And I, for one, welcome our new panda overlords. Frankly, I've been asking for it with all the fat jokes/Thai Cashew Chicken Breast references. I don't know what Justin Verlander did though.Pablo Sandoval hit home runs in each of his first three at bats against...

The World Series Pick: The Detroit Verlanders

Look Into The Face Of Giant Fear We're going to make this quick and dirty, because baseball stopped being very interesting to me weeks ago, and even a historic comeback by the Giants has not re-stoked my fire. Also, I'm just seeing this on really, really simplistic levels. Here's what I wrote about why the Tigers were going to beat the A's in five, which was exactly...

Sandoval HRs twice as Giants take 4-0 opener lead

Pablo Sandoval got the Giants off to a quick World Series start, homering against Justin Verlander in the first and third innings as San Francisco took a 4-0 lead over the Detroit Tigers in Wednesday night's opener. Sandoval hit the first bases-loaded triple in All-Star game history off Verlander in July, and kept on going against the reigning AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner...

One Down, Three to Go

Yesterday’s game was all sorts of crazy, and I think that’s best illustrated by the fact that the following sentence is a perfectly valid, accurate arrangement of words: Barry Zito singled off Justin Verlander in the fourth inning to give the Giants a 1-0 lead in Game One of the World Series. Let’s see here… Barry Zito started Game One of the World Series for the Giants...
