The San Francisco Giants got a new reliever Monday when they acquired lefty Jose Mijares off waivers from the Kansas City Royals. There's more to it. The pickup allows Jeremy Affeldt to be available for closing duties if necessary, another sign management isn't 100 percent on board with Santiago Casilla in the ninth-inning role. "With Casilla, trying to give him his needed rest, that's forced us to change our minds and do it by committee," manager Bruce Bochy said. Mijares had a 2.56 ERA. Against lefties, his ERA was 1.93. In other words, he can be a situational lefty (along with Javier Lopez), while Affeldt could work against both lefties and righties should the situation dictate it. Casilla was an All-Star candidate for much of the first half. However, this is the first season he has had full-time closing duties, and he has been inconsistent over the past several weeks, perhaps because of a finger blister. Perhaps not. It seemed surprising a lef...

Giants Claim Jose Mijares Off Waivers

Earlier today, the Giants acquired left-handed reliever Jose Mijares from the Kansas City Royals via waivers. The Giants simply claimed him off waivers and didn’t have to give up anything in return, so they basically got him for free. Mijares, 27, doesn’t hit free agency until 2015, and he’s actually having a very good season: he’s tossed 38.2 innings across 51 appearances...

Giants finish off weep of Rockies

DENVER -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy wasn't sure Tim Lincecum would survive the first inning Sunday. As Lincecum tried to hold on and escape what became a 36-pitch ordeal, Bochy had Shane Loux up and throwing. But Lincecum escaped that shaky first, regrouped and continued his second-half resurgence Sunday for the Giants, who beat the free-falling Rockies 8-3 to sweep their...

Laser pointer halts Cards-Giants game

ST. LOUIS A 17-year-old teen faces criminal charges for allegedly pointing a green laser at San Francisco pitcher Shane Loux during the seventh inning of Monday night's Cardinals-Giants game at Busch Stadium. And the fan was caught by none other than Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. The incident occurred with Matt Holliday batting for the Cardinals in the bottom of the seventh...

Postgame Wrap: Hail to the Buster

This was the first game that I’ve watched in about a week, and it was certainly a game worth paying attention to. Now, the games in Colorado were just ridiculous; yesterday’s game got way out of hand. Tonight’s game was never comfortable, but never out of reach. Babe Buster came up to bat in the first in a home-run situation and clubbed it out, as he’s pretty much been...

Giants-Cardinals Preview

The NL West-leading San Francisco Giants have slugged their way to a three-game winning streak, with Hunter Pence starting to contribute. Matt Cain wouldn't mind seeing the offensive surge continue Monday night in the opener of a four-game set with a St. Louis Cardinals club playing excellent ball at home. San Francisco (59-49), the division leader by one-half game over Los...

Craig’s two homers not enough for a Cards win

Lance Lynn allowed a three-run shot to Buster Posey in the first and St. Louis' offense could not recover against visiting San Francisco Tuesday night.

Giants 8, Rockies 3

DENVER -- Tim Lincecum continued his second-half resurgence Sunday for the Giants, who beat the free-falling Rockies 8-3 to sweep their three-game series. The Rockies finished a three-series homestand with a record of 1-8. It was Colorado's worst three-team homestand in franchise history and its second-worst overall; they went 0-7 in a two-team homestand last season. The...

SF Giants Rumors: Cabrera Contract On Hold, Overbay, Mijares And Pence

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com says the San Francisco Giants and outfielder Melky Cabrera have agreed to pick up the contract talks after the season. Heyman says it’s believed that the G-men offered Cabrera a 3-year deal worth $27 million a few weeks ago.   Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says (via twitter) the Giants have looked into signing first baseman Lyle Overbay...
