Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Mike Fiers suffered a broken right forearm while pitching for Triple-A Nashville on Saturday. It's been a year full of challenges on and off the field for Fiers, the latest occurring when New Orleans third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a line drive off of Fiers' right forearm in Nashville's 6-3 loss to the Zephyrs. The injury is expected to keep Fiers out for 9-12 weeks. After going 9-10 with a 3.74 ERA in 22 starts with the Brewers in 2012, Fiers made the rotation out of spring training due to the club wanting to take it slow with left-hander Chris Narveson's return from shoulder surgery. Fiers lasted just one start before heading to the bullpen and was eventually optioned to Triple-A on April 18. While he was in Nashville, Fiers' mother fell severely ill with lupus. The Brewers allowed Fiers to return home to be with his mother and pitch with Class-A advanced Brevard County, instead of Nashville. Fiers was recalled from Triple-A on May 11, but continued to struggle to find the success he had last season. His last start with the Brewers was a struggle, as Fiers lasted just 1 23 innings and allowed five earned runs in a loss to Philadelphia on June 2. After the game, he called himself "gutless", making his demotion to the minor leagues seem inevitable. As part of a roster shakeup, Fiers was sent down the next day. He has pitched well in Triple-A, going 1-2 with a 2.20 ERA in five starts for the Sounds, but has a 7.25 ERA in 22 13 major league innings this season. Follow Andrew Gruman on Twitter
