Sunday night’s Red Sox-Yankees game went real long, as games between the two historic rivals tend to do. Sox fans who stepped up way past their bedtime were treated to one of the more thrilling finishes in what’s turning into an unforgettable season for the club. In the bottom of the 11th inning, with the two teams tied 8-8, Boston first baseman Mike Napoli stepped to the plate. Napoli worked the count full, and got a pitch to drive. Drive it he did, as Napoli crushed a fastball from Adam Warren. It wasn’t his first homer of the night, though. Napoli took CC Sabathia deep earlier in the game with a majestic three-run home run. The game-winner then came after Napoli grounded into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. See both home runs in the video below.

It's Amore! Napoli Walks Off In 11th; Sox Win 8-7

(Jared Wickerham/Getty Images)Mike Napoli was literally hit or miss on Sunday night/Monday morning. His two HRs (including the walk-off game winner in the 11th) drove in four runs, but he also struck out three times and grounded into a base-loaded double-play. In the end, nobody cared about the outs. The 7-6 win gave Boston the series, their 60th win of the year, and a 1 1/2 game...

Mike Napoli Shows ‘Both Sides of the Coin,’ But Eventually Comes Through in Clutch Against Yankees

BOSTON — The Red Sox will take the bad with the good, especially when the good wins them a ballgame. Mike Napoli was up and down Sunday in a performance that was truly a microcosm of his season — if not his entire career. He hit two home runs, struck out three times and grounded into a big double play. Fortunately for Boston, Napoli saved his best for last, as he crushed a walk...

Mike Napoli Headbutts Dustin Pedroia, Sends Yankees Packing

I’m too bug-eyed and exhausted to give a rational assessment of last night’s/this morning’s Red Sox win over the Yankees. Let’s just say that it all came down to the magic of Mike “feast or famine” Napoli. He struck out three times, grounded into a double play, and launched two mighty homers, one of them being a walk-off beauty that finally ended this five-hour epic....

Mike Napoli’s Game-Winning Home Run Just Latest in Long Line of Red Sox Walk-Offs This Year (Videos)

There are few greater sounds in the world for Red Sox fans than the first few chords of “Dirty Water” by The Standells. The beginning of that sound, played after every Sox win at Fenway Park, sounds even better when it’s accompanied by deafening applause brought on by a walk-off win. There’s been plenty of that at Fenway this season, as the Red Sox have nine walk-off wins...

Mike Napoli lifts Red Sox to walkoff win over Yankees

Mike Napoli can’t explain it. Perhaps he’s just a slow starter, although he pretty much punched a hole in that theory this season by having the best April of his life. Maybe he likes the summer heat. Or could it be that he thrives on the pressure of a pennant race, when the stakes are highest and the spotlight is blinding? Regardless, Napoli always has saved his best for last...

Napoli powers Red Sox over Yankees

Mike Napoli homered with two outs in the 11th inning -- his second home run of the game -- and the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 8-7 on Sunday night. The Red Sox scored seven runs after falling behind 3-0, thanks in part to Napoli's three-run homer in the third. But they coughed up the lead when New York scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh to tie it 7-all...

Napoli is the hero of last nights game

Photo Courtesy of NESN Conor Frederick Contributing Writer Last night was really a tale of two games for Mike Napoli. On one hand, you had the guy who hit 2 home runs (including the game winner), and you have the player who stuck out 3 times and grounded into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the 8th. Red Sox Nation was frustrated after that double play, judging...

Late Night With Mike Napoli

The Red Sox and Yankees played until almost 1:00 am last night, going back and forth until Mike Napoli won the game in the bottom of the 11th inning with a solo home run for the 8-7 win. Napoli’s 11th-inning home run gives Sox 8-7 win – Sean McAdam has a look at an up and down night for the first baseman, who had two home runs, but also two strikeouts and killing a rally by grounding...

Game 101: Rays at Red Sox - Surging Rays invade Fenway

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer The two best teams in the American League happen to reside in the AL East. They also happen to clash tonight in Fenway Park for the first of a four-game series. Although the Boston Red Sox (60-40) are 9-3 against the Tampa Bay Rays (58-41) this season, those first 12 games came at a time when the Rays were middling around the lower-half of the...

John Lackey, Mike Napoli Among Teammates Who Showed Support at Clay Buchholz Foundation’s First Event (Video)

Clay Buchholz only created the Clay Buchholz Foundation this past year, but he’s off to a great start with the foundation as his first event was a great success — thanks in large part to his supportive teammates. The “Buchholz Bowl” raised money for Christopher’s Haven,  and Ryan Dempster, Mike Napoli, John Lackey and Ryan Lavarnway were all in attendance at the charity...

Four Real? Red Sox vs Yankees 7-21-13

It was not Yankee starter CC Sabathia's night on Sunday. The big lefty turned 33 but gave up seven ER in six-plus innings. Napoli turned on a fastball by...

3 Stars of the Games: Games 99 & 100

Ryan MacLeod Contributing Writer The Red Sox went into the first weekend after the All Star break needing only 1 win over the Yankees to win their 20th series of the season, and their 60th game. On Saturday they handed in a disappointing performance, losing 5-2 with a lackluster display of hitting. Sunday was a different story, it was a game that if the Sox had lost could have sent...
