Mariners starter Kevin Millwood left Wednesday's game against Oakland after only 2 2/3 innings because of a nagging groin injury. After retiring Kurt Suzuki on a grounder to shortstop, Mariners manager Eric Wedge and trainer Rick Griffin visited Millwood on the mound and decided to remove him. Hisashi Iwakuma came on in relief. Millwood left Seattle's combined no-hitter June 8 with a strained groin after pitching six innings. Millwood was kept off the disabled list but didn't pitch again until June 16 against San Francisco. The 37-year-old right-hander is fourth among active pitchers with 2,642 innings pitched during his 15 major league seasons.

Offensive struggles cause for concern for Mariners Ackley?

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Britton Ransford tells us the season long sophomore slump that Dustin Ackley has been going through in 2012. With Ackley tearing the cover off the ball in every level prior to the big leagues, this is cause for concern for the Mariners. Ackley has a new found fondness of striking out that never has plagued him before in his career, and his...

Millwood hurts his groin -- again

For the second time in three weeks, Seattle Mariners right-hander Kevin Millwood had to come out of game with pain in his right groin. The last time it happened, on June 8, the Mariners waited a week before putting him back in the rotation. He made three more starts after that, including Wednesday, when he left the game with two outs in the third inning of what wound up being a...

Furbush, Wilhelmsen solve Mariners' late-inning woes

Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge doesn't have quite the bullpen he thought he'd have coming into of spring training, but he's not arguing with the results. Closer Brandon League has been moved out of that role after a series of inconsistent performances in May, and George Sherrill, who was supposed to be the eighth-inning left-hander, is out for the season following...

Seattle's Gutierrez leaves after being hit in face

Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez left Thursday night's game against Boston after an errant pick-off attempt hit him on the right side of his face. Gutierrez led off the fourth inning with Seattle's first hit off Boston starter Franklin Morales. Gutierrez took his lead at first and Morales attempted a pickoff. His throw over to first was slightly into the runner...

Shutout boosts All-Star candidacy of Mariners' Hernandez

The Seattle Mariners don't have a clear choice for the All-Star Game, and the rosters are just days away from being announced. If Felix Hernandez hadn't been at the top of the list before Thursday's game, he probably was after it. Hernandez threw his fifth career shutout and struck out a season-high 13, leading the Mariners to a 1-0 win over the Boston Red Sox. Seattle...

Moments in time…The Seattle Mariners week that was

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Clinton Bell weighs in with another M’s Week That Was. Intended to be a fun column, with lots of laughs and other good stuff. Normally it will be a top 10 list, a la David Letterman style. Another bad week for the Mariners in inter-league play. Lost four out of six against the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks, Michael Saunders...

Mariners 3, Athletics 2

Brendan Ryan hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning to send the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 win over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night. Mariners starter Jason Vargas matched a career high with 10 strikeouts in 6 2-3 innings. Charlie Furbush (4-1) earned the win with a scoreless eighth and Seattle improved to 13-20 at home. Yoenis Cespedes homered for Oakland, which had...

Recap: Mariners win it in ninth as Felix shuts down the Sox.

All it took was one pitch for pinch hitter John Jaso and he drove in the game's only run to help Seattle beat the Red Sox. 1-0.  Scott Atichson had a quick breakdown in the ninth, giving up a leadoff double to Casper Wells and then intentionally walking Justin Smoak to pitch to John Jaso who took the first pitch to right field and Cody Ross made a good throw but Jarrod Saltalamacchia...

Mariners 1, Red Sox 0

SEATTLE -- Pinch hitter John Jaso's ninth-inning single scored Casper Wells and gave the Seattle Mariners and Felix Hernandez a 1-0 win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. The throw from Boston right fielder Cody Ross was in time to get Wells, but he was ruled safe by umpire Adrian Johnson when the ball popped out of Jarrod Saltalamacchia's glove. Wells started the rally...

Felix Hernandez Makes Sure Red Sox Stay 'Shut Out in Seattle' With Dominant Start (Video)

So much for that high-powered Red Sox offense. Felix Hernandez silenced the Red Sox bats on Thursday night, going the distance to pick up his sixth win of the year while tying a career high with 13 strikeouts. He needed every one of them, too, considering Franklin Morales matched him blow for blow in the early innings before giving way to the Red Sox bullpen. NESN Nation's Dan...

Red Sox-Mariners Preview

While Felix Hernandez hasn't been as sharp as in recent years, he turned in a vintage performance against one of baseball's least threatening lineups during his last start. A repeat performance could prove difficult against a Boston Red Sox club that's posted plenty of crooked numbers of late. Hernandez tries to win back-to-back starts for the first time this season...

Athletics 2, Mariners 1

SEATTLE – Since he’s played more games against Seattle than any other big league team, Yoenis Cespedes probably should have more homers against the Mariners than against anybody else. But is seems as if he is picking on Seattle. In just 10 games against the Mariners, Cespedes has hit five homers, including the seventh-inning tiebreaker off Hisashi Iwakuma on Wednesday in a...

Some Fun In The Sun For The Seattle Mariners

Four years ago Saturday, in his only at-bat of the season, Felix Hernandez hit a grand slam. When asked what makes him happier, his grand slamor the Heat winning the NBA Championship, he couldn’t say. Felix Hernandez is a Miami Heat fan. Though he loves hitting, and this past Saturday, on the anniversary of his special bag-clearing home run, Felix tagged a 2 RBI double, and became...

Red Sox head to Seattle for a set with the Mariners.

The Red Sox have finally climbed into third place in the AL East, and now take their 40-35 record on the road to start a West coast road trip against the Seattle Mariners. The Sox held their ground at home going 7-2 for their last 9 game homestand, but in the meantime lost more player [...]
