Who says true love cannot blossom on social media? Sure, most of the stories emanating from Twitter are about senseless and stupid Twitter wars over lame beefs between pro athletes and other pro athletes or wisenheimer, smart aleck followers — or high-profile athletes being fooled into believing they have a girlfriend who died from leukemia (ahem). But every once in a while, a story like the one involving Minnesota Twins pitcher Vance Worley about how he first met his fiancée on Twitter truly illustrates how impersonal online communication rife with risk can be a rewarding and ultimately life-changing experience. When Vance Worley learned he had been traded from the Philadelphia Phillies to the Minnesota Twins in December, it couldn’t have come at a worse time. The moment he found out he had been shipped to the Twinkies, he actually was at a jeweler, waiting to pick up the engagement ring he was going to use to propose to his girlfriend, model/actress Maricel Vivas. To make matters even worse as it related to his personal life off the field, Worley had just signed a lease on a house in South Jersey. But how the romance between Worley and Vivas initially developed is nearly Nicholas Sparks-esque, if the drivel Sparks wrote was about budding online relationships instead of the bond between one person and their terminally ill, dying partner. Or whatever. SHE HAD ALZHEIMER’S AND HE STATED WITH HER! Okay, moving on after losing emotional control over The Notebook, here is how David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News characterized how the improbable coupling of Worley and Vivas was spurned on by social media: The romance between Vance Worley and Maricel Vivas sounds like something out of a Kevin Costner movie, if Costner made movies in the social-media era. In September 2011, Worley was scheduled for an autograph signing in Aston, Pa. Vivas’ brother knew she was a big fan of Worley’s, so he joked that she should travel from Roxborough “to see her boyfriend.” She did, getting Worley’s autograph and snapping a picture with him. Later, via Twitter, she sent the pitcher a link to the picture. Around that same time, Hunter Pence went on Twitter asking if any of his followers wanted a date with fellow Phillies outfielder John Mayberry Jr., who had recently been featured in a New York Post gossip item that said Mayberry was trying to get a date with a model/actress who appeared in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies. Vivas responded to Pence. “She said, ‘I want a date with Vance Worley,’ ” the righthander said with a rueful smile. Oh, Twitter. What can’t it do? Other than being a relatively useless, benign and often impersonal means of instantaneous communication, that is. But hey, Twitter sure is fun, isn’t it? And don’t forget to follow me on it!
