Unlikely heroes led the Atlanta Braves past the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.  The 5-2 win by the Braves allowed them avoid a series sweep in St. Louis. The Braves were without most of their regulars on Sunday.  The Braves had Gerald Laird catching, Elliot Johnson playing 2nd, Paul Janish at 3rd, and both Jordan Schafer and Joey Terdoslavich in the outfield. The Braves wasted no time getting runs off Cardinals starter, Lance Lynn.  After a lead off triple by Jordan Schafer, Elliot Johnson singled to center as the Braves an early 1-0 lead. The Braves added 2 more runs off Lynn in the 2nd.  Paul Janish singled to right field to score Gerald Laird for the 1st run of the inning.  Jordan Schafer then doubled to deep left field off Lynn.  It looked like this could be a triple for Schafer, until ball bounced over the fence for a ground rule double.  However, his double still scored Terdoslavich and put the Braves up 3-0. The Cardinals finally got on the board in the 6th inning.  A ground out from Matt Holiday allowed Matt Carpenter to come across for the Cardinals 1st run. The Braves and Cardinals then traded runs in the 8th inning.  Gerald Laird got the RBI for the Braves in the 8th.  His sacrifice fly scored Elliot Johnson to make it 5-1. The Cardinals added their run off an Allen Craig single to center.  Matt Holliday scored making it a 5-2 score. The 3 run lead, paved the way for a Craig Kimbrel save.  The 4 out save from Kimbrel is his 41st of the season. Mike Minor was a huge part of stopping the Braves losing skid.  He only gave up 1 ER in 7 innings pitched.  He only recorded 2 strikeouts but did a great job getting the Cardinals to hit weak fly balls.  He has become the ace of the staff, and showed why on Sunday afternoon. Game MVP: Jordan Schafer: 2-4, R, 3B, 2B, and RBI Schafer did exactly what leadoff batters are supposed to do, get on base. The Braves are going to need this day in and day out as Schafer tries to fill Heyward’s spot in the lineup. Elliot Johnson and Joey Terdoslavich had great days at the plate as well.  Bout finished the game with 2 hits. Johnson was 2-4, while Terdoslavich was 2-3. They both also scored a run on Sunday. The Braves will have a much-needed off day on Monday, before the Cleveland Indians head to Turner Field.  The Braves will need to have a better showing if they want to continue to set pace with the NL best record. On Tuesday night, Alex Wood (2-2, 2.50) will be taking on Danny Salazar (1-1, 3.52). The post Minor Halts Braves Skid appeared first on Atlanta Bullpen.
