The Pittsburgh Pirates set their 40-man roster today, adding five players and protecting those players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft on December 6th. The list below includes the players who were left unprotected for the draft.
Before I get to the list, I want to point out a mistake on Gift Ngoepe’s eligibility. Ngoepe signed with the Pirates in late-2008 at the age of 18. This...
CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Cleveland Indians have signed free agent outfielders Matt Carson and Cedric Hunter to minor league contracts.
Both deals include invitations to major league spring training camp.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced the signing of six minor league free agents, via a team press release. The six players are right-handed pitchers Brooks Brown, Erik Cordier, David Bromberg, and Luis Sanz, outfielder Felix Pie, and infielder Alex Valdez. All are minor league deals, and from that group, Brown, Cordier, and Pie received invites to Spring Training. We already heard...
Before coming to the Pittsburgh Pirates near the end of Spring Training this year, Robby Rowland spent two seasons in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. A third round draft pick out of high school, with a strong bonus to match, he had some struggles during his two seasons in the Pioneer League. Things changed for him this season in a big way. He went from a thrower that posted...

Teams have until midnight to add players to the 40-man roster, or risk those players being exposed in the draft this December. The first time eligible players this year are high school players from the 2008 draft and college players from the 2009 draft. The Pirates currently have six open spots on the...
CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Cleveland Indians outrighted disappointing Matt LaPorta to Triple-A Columbus and added four players to their 40-man roster. LaPorta hasn't lived up to expectations since he was acquired in 2008 from Milwaukee as part of the trade for ace CC Sabathia.
LaPorta began last season in the minors after undergoing hip surgery. He batted .241 with one homer and...

His career as defensive replacement is cemented with his pre-game ritual of long-toss from foul pole to foul pole. Rob Neyer (Member him? I think he used to write for ESPN.) suggested Trevor Bauer could even make the Guinness Book of World Records if he could motivate one of those lazy Guinness record keepers off their butt and out to the field. The current record is held by a...
1. Gerrit Cole, RHP – Everyone knows all about Cole. Good results, knocking on the door. Just a matter of time before we get to see his Ace potential in Pittsburgh, possibly this season. 2. Alen Hanson, SS – Building quite the resume. Very Young. Still very raw. Much of his ranking is dependent on [...]
The Pittsburgh Pirates announced they have added the following five players to the 40-man roster:
Middle relievers are never the sexiest names available during the offseason, but it’s hard to dispute just how important a solid bullpen is to a team’s success. For that reason, it’s shouldn’t be too surprising that Jason Grilli is reportedly drawing interest from nearly a third of the league.
Grilli, who just turned 36, has transformed into a solid reliever the past two...
