Marlins try to bounce back behind Zambrano

While arguably no one's been hotter than Andrew McCutchen of late, the Pittsburgh Pirates' Neil Walker and Pedro Alvarez are also becoming of some well-deserved acclaim. Winner of 14 of 19, Pittsburgh looks to keep things going Saturday night in the second of three games with the visiting Miami Marlins. Sitting one-half game behind Cincinnati in the NL Central, Pittsburgh...

Walking to victory

The Pirates got another great home start from A.J. Burnett on Saturday, and took advantage of some Miami gifts to win their fourth straight game and go to 13 over .500. Burnett was not dominant (8 hits and only 3 K’s) but did a wonderful job going 7.2 innings while allowing just one run on a solo homer. A.J. was able to get the outs when he needed them and also gave the bullpen...

Friday night fireworks

The Pirates pulled off yet another comeback victory in front of yet another great crowd on Friday night, opening this weekend’s series in style with a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins. Kevin Correia turned in a pretty typical outing. He was hit hard early on (two runs in the first, including a Jose Reyes leadoff bomb) and it seemed like he’d be in some serious trouble, but then...

Who’s Hot: Andrew McCutchen

Off we go! Hottest of the Hot: Andrew McCutchen, Pittsburgh – For the season, McCutchen is hitting .371/.426/.644 (1st in the NL) and boasts a 1.075 OPS (also...

A Trip Down Memory Lane: Billy Rohr

Billy Rohr Billy Rohr was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates for $25,000 in 1963. The Pirates attempted to hide Rohr’s obvious skill by placing him on the disabled list the entire year. This did not fool the Red Sox who drafted Rohr in November that year. Rohr would pitch well the following 3 years in the Red Sox system. In stints at Wellsville, Winston-Salem and the Red Sox AAA...

Cubs-Pirates Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates' amazing play at home started two months ago when they last faced the Chicago Cubs. The Pirates will try for their first six-game win streak in four seasons Monday night when they open a three-game set against the Cubs, who have not scored in their last 25 innings. Pittsburgh (54-40) owns baseball's best home mark at 32-14, but was only 11-10 when...

Pittsburgh Sweeps

With Sunday’s 3-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the books, the Miami Marlins have lost five games in a row.   Miami is now at a season worst seven games under .500 after being swept in Pittsburgh.   Overall on the road trip, the Marlins loss five of six and have nearly taken themselves out of playoff contention in the process. Anibal Sanchez made what may turn out to be...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs – Game 95

I’m baaaaaack.  Nice to see the Buccos staying afloat without my previews.  I was legitimately worried. First five game winning streak of the season?  This isn’t last year’s Buccos.  It’s time to stop worrying about the streak and start worrying about making the playoffs. The Pirates swept the Cubs in the first series.  It’s time [...]
