First Pitch: Why I Don’t Think the Pirates Are Done After Marte Promotion

After it was announced that Starling Marte would be promoted tomorrow, I started getting the following question on Twitter: Do you think the Pirates will make any more moves now that Starling Marte is up? My answer: yes. My reasoning: look at the pitching. The pitching staff has been strong this year. Not only has it been strong, but it has depth. Jeff Locke, Justin Wilson, and previously...

Pirates Notebook: Marte Impressive in Debut; Jones Hitting Lefties

Starling Marte was impressive in his Major League debut. Manager Clint Hurdle always gives the same message to rookies when they first arrive to the big leagues — respect everything and fear nothing. The message must have resonated with the 23-year-old Startling Marte in his Major League debut on Thursday in Houston. Because that’s exactly what he did. The outfielder stepped...

Pirates Motivated to Move Kevin Correia

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN has three updates on Twitter, noting that the Pittsburgh Pirates are looking to deal starting pitcher Kevin Correia. Crasnick says that the Pirates are letting teams know that the right-hander is available. He adds that a source says they’re motivated to move Correia, even though he’s won six straight decisions. Finally, he notes that Correia is owed $1...

This Date in Pirates History: July 27

Only two former Pittsburgh Pirates players born on this date and they played with the team nearly 100 years apart from each other. In his Jolly Roger Rewind, John Fredland covers an important doubleheader from the last World Series champs in team history. Enrique Wilson (1973) Infielder for the 2000-01 Pirates. He was originally signed by the Twins in 1992 as an amateur free agent...

Memorable start for Marte

There was a good significant amount of buzz among Pirates fans coming into tonight’s game because of Starling Marte‘s major league debut, and I’m sure everyone’s eyes were on the rookie as he stepped in to the box for his first MLB at bat at 8:05. He didn’t disappoint. Instead of watching the first pitch like most leadoff hitters (and certainly most hitters making their...

Pirates call up Starling Marte

The Pirates have been trying to trade for an outfielder the last few weeks without success. So while general manager Neal Huntington continues to look for an established bat, he has decided to call up his best hitting prospect to fill the void in the interim.

Some Friday morning links: Ultimate Fan Guide and Kevin Corriea and other things

Let's start out with some self-promotion: Pittsburgh Magazine has put their Ultimate Fan Guide together for the Pirates and Steelers and Penguins and I helped out some with the Pirates/PNC Park section. You should check it out. You've probably seen this by now, but in light of the Wandy Rodriguez trade the Pirates will move Kevin Correia to the bullpen. Correia is not happy...

Here Comes The Marte

Well the word is out, Starling Marte will meet the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club in Houston.  A promotion!  He is free. Soooooooooo Thanks Chris. Anyway. It was bound to happen. I still think it is the wrong move to make. Marte has been good, not great at Triple A. The reasons why for and against [...]

Game 98: Pirates 5 Astros 3

On the bus home tonight, a thought popped into my head. It flitted in and out pretty quickly, but it was definitely there. "What if Starling Marte homers in his first at-bat?"I didn't really have an answer, and I pushed the thought out pretty quickly. I always ask that when a player makes a debut, because it's such a cool thing to have a player homer in his first...

Pirates-Astros Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to open a season-high 10-game road trip in Houston. Two new faces that they're hoping will help get them to the playoffs for the first time in 20 years will join them there. Former Astros left-hander Wandy Rodriguez will meet his new Pirates teammates and prized prospect Starling Marte is expected to make his major league debut Thursday night in...

Rosenthal: Pirates 'not currently optimistic' about finding hitter

#Pirates not currently optimistic about their search for a hitter. Few available, prices high. Plenty of time for that to change. — Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 27, 2012 This shouldn't be a surprise; some teams are treating the current trade market like nothing has changed even though compensation picks for traded players have been eliminated and others have realized...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Houston Astros – Game 100

Time to take this series.  Like I said the Pirates should sweep these guys.  Most importantly they just need to win the series.  They haven’t been playing great but have been finding ways to win while some guys are struggling.  Those guys will likely come back around again so just gotta keep scratching out wins. [...]
