Pittsburgh Pirates: Trade deadline update

Some numbered thoughts heading into Tuesday’s MLB 4:00PM non-waiver trade deadline… 1-5:  Wandy Rodriguez 1.  I’ve been very critical of Pirates’ GM Neal Huntington over the past year, but I was impressed with last week’s SP Wandy Rodriguez trade with Houston.  While other clubs were still jockeying with the Cubs for Ryan Dempster, and waiting to see if the Phillies...

Biertempfel: Pirates Unwilling to Part with Top Prospects

Rob Biertempfel reports: The Pirates are reluctant to part with rookie outfielder Starling Marte or top right-handed pitching prospects Jameson Taillon and Gerrit Cole, which takes them out of the running for outfielder such as Hunter Pence, Shane Victorino and Shin-Soo Choo. I think the Pirates are definitely being smart in not giving up any of these three guys for the people mentioned...

Pirates Designate Drew Sutton For Assignment

The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated infielder Drew Sutton for assignment, per a team press release. The move was made to create a spot on the 25-man roster for relief pitcher Daniel McCutchen, who Kristy Robinson reported earlier would be getting the call to the majors to replace Brad Lincoln. Sutton hit for a .243/.278/.419 line in 74 at-bats with the Pirates.

Pirates Notebook: Bedard Is the Latest Starter to Struggle; Cruz Working His Way Back

After seeing James McDonald’s post All-Star break struggles continue on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Pirates needed the Erik Bedard that — after some adjustments — has been dominant his first two starts in the second half of the season on the mound in Chicago on Monday. And over the first three innings, it looked like the Pirates would get the start they needed. Bedard struck out...

Cole vs. Marshall in Battle of Aces; Joba to pitch in relief for Trenton Thunder

Gerrit Cole and Brett Marshall are the starters tonight in Trenton while Joba Chamberlain will make a relief appearance. Waterfront Park will serve as the grand stage for arguably the most anticipated pitching matchup of the season in all of minor league baseball tonight when the Trenton Thunder(64-44) welcome in the Altoona Curve (54-53) for a three game series. Gerrit Cole, the...

Victor Black Dominating With an Upper 90s Fastball and Plus Slider

Vic Black has been dominant in his first season at the Douhle-A Level. When spring training broke camp, the Pirates decided to promote Victor Black aggressively to the Double-A level, despite just 6.2 innings in high-A. Black, Pittsburgh’s first round supplemental pick in the 2009 draft, had only compiled 71.2 innings over parts of three seasons since getting drafted. Several...

Pirates trade RHP Lincoln to Toronto for OF Snider

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded pitcher Brad Lincoln to the Toronto Blue Jays for outfielder Travis Snider. Snider was pulled after the sixth inning of Monday night's game at Seattle. The Blue Jays and Pirates announced the deal shortly thereafter. Snider went 1 for 2 with a walk in his final game for Toronto. The 24-year-old began the day batting .235 with three home runs...

Reports: Pirates acquire Snider from Blue Jays

The Pittsburgh Pirates, a surprise contender in the NL Central and wild-card races, made a move to bolster their offense Monday, acquiring outfielder Travis Snider from the Toronto, according to multiple media reports. The Blue Jays reportedly will receive right-handed reliever Brad Lincoln. Snider, 24, was pulled from Toronto's game at Seattle in the seventh inning after...

Bucs edge Astros yet again

The Pirates found another way to win (or the Astros found another way to lose, depending on how you want to look at it) as they defeated Houston for the third straight night to improve to sixteen games over .500. SIXTEEN! Wandy Rodriguez‘s Pirates debut was “meh.” He was uncharacteristically wild (five walks despite averaging just 2.2 per nine innings) but pitched out of trouble...

Thoughts About the "Win Now" Attitude

I just wrote this post about the Pirates trade for Travis Snider. For as long as it is, you may be surprised to know that I didn't say all that I needed to say there. The main beef with the move, and the comments I've been getting all morning are about the "win now" attitude. "I've heard enough about future, I want to win right now". That's what...

Blue Jays, Pirates swap Snider for Lincoln

Last week, I mentioned that the Blue Jays had a very interesting trade chip in Travis Snider. Late tonight, Toronto cashed in that trade chip, sending Snider to Pittsburgh for Brad Lincoln.  On the surface, this doesn't seem like very good value for Snider. Lincoln's "just a reliever", but a good one, He's been a crucial part of Pittsburgh's bullpen...

Astros edged by Rodriguez, Pirates

HOUSTON (AP) -- Rod Barajas hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied past Houston 4-3 on Saturday night, sending the Astros to their club-record 12th straight loss. Wandy Rodriguez pitched six innings in his Pittsburgh debut, allowing three runs and six hits with five walks against his former team. The free-falling Astros, who have lost 25...

Deven Marrero: Two Million Dollar Man?

In the weeks leading up to the 2012 Major League Baseball Rule 4 Draft, Deven Marrero was considered a potential top-10 overall pick. The Pittsburgh Pirates were considered an ideal landing spot at eighth overall considering the organization has fielded just one, two-win shortstop since 1995 in Jack Wilson. As the draft unfolded, the story of the day became Stanford University pitcher...

Reed Johnson Traded, But Not to the Pirates

UPDATE 10:35 PM: Bill Brink reports that the Pirates weren’t the team to add Johnson. UPDATE 10:33 PM: Rob Biertempfel reports that it is unlikely the Pirates have acquired Johnson. UPDATE 10:31 PM: Ken Rosenthal reports that Johnson and Soto were in separate deals. UPDATE 10:27 PM: Jon Heyman reports that Johnson has been traded, but that it’s a mystery where he’s going. Also...
