Tony Sanchez on the Taxi Squad — Are His Throwing Issues Behind Him?

Tony Sanchez is on the taxi squad. Is he over his throwing problems and ready for the majors? (Photo Credit: David Hague) Michael McKenry hurt his left knee last night sliding into second base. McKenry got a late slide and hit his knee on the bag during the slide, leading to his knee getting “stuck” as he described it. There was no update on his status this morning, although...

First Pitch: Using Hanson and Polanco Helps to Predict Future Promotions

Every year at the start of the year I get the same questions: When do you think (Insert Player) will be promoted to (Insert level that is one higher than his current level)? Of course then I get the same question over and over until that player is promoted. At which point I get the same question, only for the next level. I understand it. The only purpose of the minor leagues is developing...

Prospect Watch: Another No-Hitter, Dickerson Drives In Eight Runs

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Rankings are from the mid-season rankings, and links on each name go to their Pirates...

Pittsburgh Pirates closer Jason Grilli will not require surgery

Jason Grilli The Pittsburgh Pirates lost their closer Jason Grilli on Monday night against the Washington Nationals. According to team doctors, the injury will not require surgery but will require rest...

Pittsburgh Pirates recall catcher Tony Sanchez

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed right fielder Travis Snider on the 15-day disabled list with discomfort in his big toe. Snider is batting .219 with 3 home runs and 23 RBIs for the Pirates. With his offensive struggles much of this season, Snider has been a disappoint since coming over in a trade last year.  The injury could persuade the Pirates to shop for a right fielder at...

McKenry Has a Career Night at the Plate, But Also Tweaks Knee

Michael McKenry had a big night at the plate, but also tweaked his knee. (Photo by: David Hague) The Pirates had some unlikely heroes step up in tonight’s 7-4 win over the Miami Marlins. The offense was led by Michael McKenry. That’s the same Michael McKenry who Pirates fans have wanted demoted in favor of Tony Sanchez for most of the last two months. It’s the same McKenry...

First Pitch: Is the Trade Deadline Overrated?

Wandy Rodriguez was only worth half a win for the Pirates down the stretch last year. That low value is more common than you think. (Photo by: David Hague) There’s one thing I’ve never understood about the trade deadline. A team contends for the majority of the season. They hold their own against other contending teams, and beat the weaker teams. You get a situation where a team...

The 36-year-old made...

Marlins Win the Battle of the Young Aces; Wandy and Snider Updates

Gerrit Cole was good today, but Jose Fernandez was better. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Gerrit Cole vs Jose Fernandez. That was the matchup today. One was a first overall pick in the 2011 draft. The other was taken 13 picks later. Both have progressed to the point where they look like they could be future number one starters. Unfortunately for the Pirates, Fernandez looks like he...

Game 102: Pirates 7 Nationals 4

14 hits, six with runners in scoring position, four from Mike McKenry. That's certainly one way to follow up a shutout loss. Everyone that follows the Pirates knows about their woes with runners on base, but on Saturday night they strung together hit after hit after hit with runners on, overwhelming a Marlin team that tried to mount a comeback against a less-than-sharp Charlie...

Marlins 2, Pirates 0

Henderson Alvarez earned his first National League victory, Giancarlo Stanton hit his 12th homer, and the Miami Marlins managed another low-scoring victory, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0 on Friday night. The Marlins are 4-4 since the All-Star break even though they have totaled only 15 runs. Jeff Locke (9-3) allowed only one earned run in 6 2-3 innings and had a career-high...

Game 103: Marlins 3 Pirates 2

There are plenty of ways to talk about this game; one is to say that the Pirates lost two of three to the Marlins, who are generally pretty terrible and have the NL's worst record. Another would be to point out that since June 8th, the Marlins are 23-19, which is the NL East's best record in that span. You can point to all of the strikeouts (13 at the hands of rookie Jose...
