First Pitch: The Pirates Need to Upgrade the Offense, and Right Field Stands Out

We’ve talked a lot lately about how strong the starting pitching has been this year. From the best five starters to all of the depth options, the Pirates have gotten great results. Things could get better in a few weeks when they’re hopefully choosing between Gerrit Cole and Charlie Morton for the fifth spot, while having no space for James McDonald and Jeanmar Gomez. A lot of...

Prospect Watch: Lambo Homers Twice; Gomez Throws Five No Hit in Rehab Start

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Rankings are from the mid-season rankings, and links on each name go to their Pirates...

The Pirates, Giancarlo Stanton, and trading prospects

David Schoenfeld lit a fire under Pirate fans this morning with his post on ESPN's SweetSpot blog entitled, "Pirates need to make big pitch for Stanton." The Stanton in question is, of course, the Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton. You can probably guess Schoenfeld's logic from here, but let's lay it out. The Pirates need offense, Giancarlo Stanton is one of the...

Jeanmar Gomez may make next start for Pirates

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Jeanmar Gomez is on course to make his next start in the majors after a successful minor-league outing on Wednesday, the last stage in his rehab from a forearm injury. Jeremy Warnemuende of MLB.com reports that Gomez  pitched five innings for Triple-A Indianapolis, giving up just one walk and no hits and striking out four.  Pirates manager Clint...

First Pitch: The Pirates Don’t Need Giancarlo Stanton

“Being a consumer is like a job. You have to make sure you get the best one. If you get a Blu-Ray player, you gotta do research. You gotta look at reviews of a player. You’ve gotta go on Amazon and read a really long review, written by an insane person, who’s been dead for months. Because he shot his wife and then himself, after explaining to you that the remote is counter...

Pedro Alvarez’s Five-RBI Day Completes Series Split in Cincinnati

Pedro Alvarez remains 5th in the NL in home runs. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Clint Hurdle is fond of saying that Pedro Alvarez can change the game with one swing of the bat, and I am fond of quoting Clint Hurdle saying that Pedro Alvarez can change the game with one swing of the bat. In the Pirates’ 5-3 win Thursday over the Cincinnati Reds, Alvarez changed the game three different...

Angels can't keep up vs. Cole, Pirates

(AP) -- Gerrit Cole pitched four-hit ball into the seventh inning in his native Orange County, earning his third straight victory to open his major league career in the Pittsburgh Pirates' 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. The Pirates' 22-year-old right-hander out of Orange Lutheran High School and UCLA dazzled the Angels in his first...

Pirates trying to prove they can play for the long haul

CINCINNATI Seventy-four games into the season and the Reds are pretty much where most people expected them to be, near the top of the NL Central division. Maybe St. Louis has surprised some by exactly how well it has played so far but no one should be shocked that the Cardinals are at the top of the standings. Its in their blood. The question remains to be seen if the Pirates can...

Game 73 Preview: Pirates vs. Reds

Pirates (42-30) at Reds (44-29) 12:35 PM–Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Pirates will look for a series split this afternoon before they leave Cincinnati. Last night’s loss was a tough one for several reasons – not the least of which is the fact that nearly the entire bullpen was used, and it will probably be needed again today. The odds aren’t...

A west coast swing

The Pirates are usually terrible on the west coast. I'm not going to look the numbers up, but you don't need me to. When the Pirates play games after the east coast has fallen asleep, they lose a lot. Now is the time to change that. Neither the Angels nor the Mariners are very good this year. The Pirates need to beat teams like this. Their first stop takes them to Los...

Game 74: Pirates 4 Angels 2

I think that Gerrit Cole broke the PitchFX pitch classification system tonight. I mean, seriously, what do you even do with this? According to the pitch classification, Cole threw 90% fastballs with maybe a handful or two of sliders mixed it. From what I could tell and from the best guesses of everyone watching the game and talking about it online, Cole threw a four-seam fastball...
