AAA: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees

Newly-acquired Chris Schwinden started for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and promptly showed why he was on the scrap heap to begin with. Schwinden was tagged for four runs (three earned) on eight hits in just four innings of work, as he took his seventh AAA loss of the season. Chase Whitley and Juan Cedeno did their best to hold down the fort over the next four innings, but the damage was already done, as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre fell to Rochester 5-3. Ronnier Mustelier hit his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning. Corban Joseph and Cole Garner also produced an extra-base hit in the loss.

AA: Trenton Thunder
Runs batted in by Zoilo Almonte and David Adams in the 11th inning made all the difference in the Thunder’s 6-3 victory on Sunday. With the bases loaded, Almonte grounded out, causing a run to score and break the tie. Immediately after, Adams hit a single back up the middle, scoring two runs. Adams had already been having a good day, and he wound up 3-for-5 with a run scored. Melky Mesa hit his 11th home run of the season as he went 3-f0r-5 with three RBIs. Luke Murton and Damon Sublett also had multi-hit games. Trenton sent their ace, Vidal Nuno, to the mound, and he held his own through 5.1 innings. Nuno gave up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts, but was pulled for Kelvin Perez after 74 pitches. Perez, who owns a sub-1.00 ERA, gave up his first earned run since June before giving way to Ricky Orta. Orta was perfect through 1.2 innings before leaving with an elbow injury and giving way to Ryan Flannery.

High-A: Tampa Yankees
Zach Wilson’s three-hit performance was the driving force behind Tampa’s walk-off 2-1 victory in ten innings on Sunday. Just a .231 hitter on the season, Wilson’s 10th inning single to right field scored Kyle Roller and gave the Yankees the win. It was remarkably quiet offensively prior to that, with only J.R. Murphy bringing home a run in the first inning on a groundout. Slade Heathcott continues to work himself back from off-season surgery by DHing, and he turned in a 1-for-5 performance yesterday. Jose Ramirez started for Tampa, turning in four innings of shutout baseball. He allowed just three hits and struck out four. Aaron Dott allowed the only run in 3.1 innings of work. For the first time since May, Mark Montgomery appeared in a game and failed to strike out a single batter.

Class-A: Charleston RiverDogs
William Oliver stole the show for the RiverDogs with one of his most impressive pitching performances of the season on Sunday. The right-hander threw six innings, limiting Greenville to just one run on five hits while striking out four. The 5-1 Charleston victory was Oliver’s third of the season. Ben Gamel produced a pair of RBI during a 1-for-3 day for the RiverDogs. The bottom of the line-up is what really put Charleston over the top offensively, with DH Kelvin De Leon going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored. Ali Castillo tacked on a 2-for-3 day with a double and an RBI as well.

Cano carries Yanks past White Sox

Phil Hughes fought the 95 degrees on the thermometer with zeros on the scoreboard. Hughes pitched eight efficient innings, Robinson Cano hit a tiebreaking two-run homer after wasting a chance with the bases loaded his first time up and the New York Yankees again rode the long ball to a 4-2 win Sunday over the Chicago White Sox for a series split between division leaders. '...

BP Unfiltered: Just Forget About Match-Up Stats by Ben Lindbergh

In the first inning of Sunday's Yankees-White Sox game, Robinson Cano grounded into a double play off Gavin Floyd. In the third inning, he worked his way into a 3-1 count. Here's what happened then: That's an ugly swing, especially in a hitter's count. Cano certainly thought so. That prompted this exchange between YES Network broadcasters Michael Kay...

Yankees-Rays Preview

With two regulars missing from their rotation, the New York Yankees could sorely use some better performances from Freddy Garcia than the last time he was in the rotation. A visit to the struggling Tampa Bay Rays might help Garcia ease back into a starting role and enable the Yankees to end their seven-game skid at Tropicana Field on Monday night. New York (48-30) suffered two...

Yanks Acquire Chad Qualls

To make room for Quallls on the 40-man roster the Yankees have designated Matt Antonelli for assignment. The 33-year-old was 1-1 with a 4.60 ERA in 35 games for the Phillies this season. In 31.1 innings, the right-hander allowed 16 ER on 39 hits, walked 9, and struck out 19.
