Game one of the playoffs went to the Pawtucket Red Sox, as they got to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter John Maine early and often to defeat the Yankees 7-4. Chased after just 4.2 innings, Maine allowed five runs on seven hits as he took the loss. After he left, Chase Whitley shut the Phillies down for 2.1 innings, before giving way to Kelvin Perez, who allowed two runs in the eighth. On offense, Corban Joseph and Ramiro Pena led the team with two hits each, but the runs came primarily from the long ball. Luke Murton, making his Triple-A debut, launched a two-run shot in the third inning. Leadoff batter Kevin Russo also had a home run in the third, providing three of the team’s four runs. The victory gave Pawtucket a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
AA: Trenton Thunder
Trenton ace Brett Marshall tossed seven innings last night, but the four runs he allowed were enough to push Reading past the Thunder by a score of 4-2. With the win, Reading now takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series. For Marshall, three of the four runs he allowed came by way of home runs. After Marshall left, Mark Montgomery finished up the game, tossing a scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts. At the plate, Adonis Garcia led the team with two hits on the evening, but the only runs came from newly-promoted Ramon Flores. Just two days after making his Trenton debut, Flores took Austin Hyatt deep in the fourth inning, at the time giving the Thunder a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for Trenton, that would be the extent of their offensive output on the day.

From Chad Jennings:Before last night’s win put the Yankees back into sole possession of first place in the American League East, general manager Brian Cashman provided a pretty blunt assessment of what the Yankees had been doing for the past seven weeks and what they planned on doing for the next month.
“We’re just not playing up to the best of our abilities, that’s all...
As a September to remember begins to unfold before us in Major League Baseball, the Yankees find themselves in an interesting position. It was a really big deal when, on Tuesday, the Orioles beat the Blue Jays and the Yankees lost to the Rays, causing a tie atop the AL East standings. Just weeks earlier, the Yankees had had a ten-game advantage, and losing that kind of edge — to the Orioles! — was unimaginable. Then, Wednesday, the Orioles lost to the Blue Jays and the Yankees beat the Rays, restoring for New...

The Yankees have blown a 10-game division lead in 47 days. They started play Wednesday tied with the Baltimore Orioles. The Rays are only 1 1/2 games back.

For weeks, manager Joe Girardi talked about how well Russell Martin was hitting the ball only to be foiled by the misfortune of hitting it at the opposing team's fielders. Wednesday, Martin kept the ball away from the Tampa Bay Rays. Girardi inserted Martin in the No. 5 hole against lefty Matt Moore, hoping to see some of those good swings manifest into big hits for the struggling...

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The “master plan,” said Alex Rodriguez, is back “in order." A pre-game team meeting, a hard-fought win and an aggressive style of offense apparently did wonders for the New York Yankees on Wednesday, as they salvaged the final game of a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays, 6-4 at Tropicana Field and retook sole possession of first place...
