Found July 01, 2013 on The Flagrant Fan:
Happy Canada Day to my friends north of the border. And Happy Birthday to my first wife, a lovely lady and mother to my children. June went by in a blur. But I guess that is what all older people say. I am excited about a new month though because May and June were so ordinary and blah when it came to picking games. Both months just scraped by a bit over .500 and the season's tally is still riding a hot April with no help from the last two months. Yesterday ended the month in typical fashion at 8-7. I am so tired of being just barely adequate at picking these things. So what has the new month to offer? A fresh slate. More of a crystallizing of what teams are good and which are not. The best weather of Northern Maine. And, with any kind of luck, better picking. Let's get it started with Monday, July 1: The Blue Jays over the Tigers: R.A. Dickey has pitched three good outings in a row. The Blue Jays are at home and despite a tough series against the Red Sox are playing...

MMO Players of The Week: Satin, Marcum and Q Get Some Love!

Is it just me or is there a pattern developing here? A great stretch of games followed by disappointment, followed by another positive stretch which is then followed by more disappointment… it’s something that makes the 2013 Mets such a frustrating bunch to watch. But let’s veer away from all of that negativity and pick out some of the positives of the week– 3 to be exact...

Preview: Yankees @ Twins (7/1/13)

The Yankees and Andy Pettitte (5-6, 4.22 ERA) hope July is more kind to them than June was. They head to Minnesota for a four game set against the Twins and Scott Diamond (5-7, 5.40 ERA). Since picking up career win number 250 on June 8th, Pettitte has lost his last three outings posting a 5.49 ERA over that stretch. Diamond looked good through four innings Wednesday against...

Jose Fernandez thus far

One of the most interesting stories in baseball this season is the Miami Marlins employing a twenty year old starting pitcher from Cuba who never pitched a game above A+ ball before this season. The Jose Fernandez story has been largely overlooked because of where the Marlins currently sit in the standings and the lack of national exposure the team gets. Now that we are nearing...

Twins look to push Yankees' losing streak to six

The New York Yankees are looking to put an ugly June behind them in which they finished tied for the third-worst record in baseball. Having Andy Pettitte on the mound to face the Minnesota Twins could help them avoid their first six-game losing streak in six seasons. Pettitte has won his last 10 overall decisions against the Twins and will start Monday night for the visiting Yankees...

Pettitte sets Yankees record for Ks

Andy Pettitte has broken Whitey Ford's record for career strikeouts by a New York Yankees pitcher. Pettitte struck out Justin Morneau in the fifth inning against Minnesota on Monday night to give him 1,958 as a Yankee. Ford had held the mark since he retired in 1967. Pettitte entered the game needing two strikeouts to break the record. He fanned Clete Thomas in the second inning...

Jose Fernandez shuts down Padres in Marlins' victory

MIAMI (AP) -- Jose Fernandez struck out 10 and allowed only two hits in a career-high eight innings, and the Miami Marlins matched a season high with their third consecutive victory by beating the San Diego Padres 4-0 Monday night. Jeff Mathis delivered the big hit for the second game in a row, raising his batting average to .154. He hit a three-run double in the sixth, when the...

Rays-Astros Preview

Matt Moore has been having some control issues, but what's more important is that he's back in the win column. The Tampa Bay Rays left-hander will try to win a third straight start Monday night when the Rays and Houston Astros begin a four-game set at Minute Maid Park. In part due to his 8-0 start, Moore (10-3, 3.95 ERA) is already one victory shy of a career high. However...

Matt Moore, Ryan Roberts power Rays past Astros

HOUSTON (AP) -- Matt Moore allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings for his 11th win, and Ryan Roberts homered twice to give the Tampa Bay Rays a 12-0 win over the Houston Astros on Monday night. Moore (11-3) won his third straight decision and Cesar Ramos pitched two perfect innings to complete the two-hitter and help the Rays win their third in a row. Roberts made it 3-0 with...

Game 85: Giants 1, Reds 8

Using two hands is especially important in the rain.I’ve never written a game wrap for a shortened game before. I wondered what the line-score would look like. With a score like 1-8, you wouldn’t have guessed that this game was called after the sixth inning, but in fact, this was a complete game for Bronson Arroyo. In his 6.0 innings of work, he allowed just 1 run on 2 hits...

Brewers-Nationals Preview

Looking to tie for the major league lead with his 12th victory, Jordan Zimmermann should feel very confident about his chances Monday night. While trying to extend his dominance at home, the right-hander is facing a slumping offense and an opponent against which he's unbeaten as the Washington Nationals open a four-game series with the sinking Milwaukee Brewers. This game also...

Game Preview: Diamondbacks vs Mets

The Mets start a series with the Diamondbacks tonight fresh off dropping a series with the Nationals. Yesterday the wheels (really no pun intended, I say this a lot) fell off for the Mets as they just couldn’t get anything positive going. The game ended with Recker pitching, which is, well a white flag. Anyway, Shaun Marcum pitches for the Mets tonight as he faces Wade Miley. Marcum...

Reds, Giants both struggling

The San Francisco Giants' run to last year's World Series title nearly ended in the division series until they swept their road games against the Cincinnati Reds. The Giants will have a more modest goal when they return to Great American Ball Park. San Francisco will try to turn around what's so far been a miserable road trip while Cincinnati will seek to bounce back...
