The All Star Game is tonight and I supposed I should pick who is going to win. After all, the road to October starts here. That was only slightly sarcastic. Home field advantage in the World Series is sort of a big deal. We could debate whether something so important should be decided by an exhibition game. I would be against the idea. But there it is. Despite having to get most of the players in the game, the managers also have to try to win it. Good luck with all of that. Most of these games are decided early. Whichever starter is not effective will lose the game. The NL has jumped into an early lead in recent years and that lead has held up. The addition in recent years of lots of relief specialists has greatly changed the nature of the game. Having a starter warm up in a position he is unaccustomed is totally different than a pitcher who does it for a living. Frankly, only one or two relievers should be allowed on each team and that is it. But that is not the way it is. Th...

MMO GFX: Happy Harvey Day!

As most of you know by now, Matt Harvey has been named the National League starting pitcher at the 84th All-Star Game to be played at Citi Field tonight at 8 p.m. EST. Harvey is the third Mets pitcher to start an All-Star Game. Dwight Gooden started the 1988 All-Star Game at Cincinnati and the 1986 Game at Houston. Tom Seaver started the 1970 All-Star Game in Cincinnati. Harvey...

Harvey wants to have life like Jeter

Mets phenom Matt Harvey is living the dream in his first full season in the majors, starting the All-Star Game in front of the hometown fans and dating a supermodel. So why not shoot for the moon? Harvey said he wants to have Derek Jeter's life, especially his love life, and have "the best apartment in the city" when he gets "that $200 million contract."...

Max Scherzer signed autographs for military personnel prior to the All Star Game

Max Scherzer started the All Star Game for the American League and promptly retired Brandon Phillips, Carlos Beltran and Joey Votto in order.  However, that was far from the best thing Max did on Tuesday.  Prior to the game, Scherzer signed autographs for dozens of military personnel who were allowed on to the field. As Hardball Talk said, Scherzer stopping to sign autographs was...

Matt Harvey Trolls The Streets Of New York

Tonight the New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey will take the mound at Citi Field to start the Major League Baseball All-Star Game less than a year after making his MLB debut on the very same field. And the 24-year-old hurler clearly deserves it; he’s carrying a 7-2 record with a National League best 147 [...]The post Matt Harvey Trolls The Streets Of New York appeared first on The...

Max Scherzer to start All-Star Game

Max Scherzer's season got even better Monday. Tigers manager Jim Leyland announced that Scherzer, who is 13-1 with a 3.19 ERA, will start Tuesday's All-Star Game. "Thirteen-and one Max Scherzer, I don't think I need to explain it any more than that," Leyland told the assembled media in New York. After his start Saturday against the Texas Rangers, his first...

All Star Game Preview

Hometown pitcher Matt Harvey (7-2, 2.35 ERA) of the Mets gets the ball for the National League and will be going up against Max Schrezer (13-1, 3.19 ERA) of the Tigers for the 2013 All Star Game. Harvey has been the bright spot for the Mets this season in an otherwise forgetful first half. He leads the NL with 147 strikeouts and his Whip is a measly 0.92, second best in the NL.Â...

Tigers help AL win All-Star game

The Tigers were not only well-represented at the All-Star Game at New York's Citi Field, they represented well in the American League's 3-0 shutout of the National League. First, Tigers starter Max Scherzer, 13-1 so far this season, started for the AL and pitched a perfect first inning. He retired Cincinnati's Brandon Phillips on a flyout, St. Louis' Carlos Beltran...

TOC midseason awards: NL Cy Young

The NL Cy Young award, like the AL award, is a two horse race. Kershaw. Harvey. Kershaw. Harvey. It's interesting that the award has come down to these two pitchers, despite neither of them leading the National League in fWAR. But Kershaw leads baseball in ERA, and Harvey is fourth in the majors while leading the National League in strikeout rate, so it at least makes sense that...

Fantasy Baseball All-Star Break Rankings - Pitchers & Catchers

Max Scherzer is the clear cut favorite for the AL Cy Young Award, but in the NL its a tight race between Adam Wainwright and Clayton Kershaw. Wainwright is getting more run support, leading to more W and if he reaches 20, then there is no debate. Wainwright also has walked 20 less batters in 1.1 more innings pitched, and by 20 less batters I mean he has walked 15 batters all season...
