Chris and Melanie Perez (via WEWS) Criminal complaints will be filed against Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez and his wife Melanie, per Scott Taylor of 19 Action News in Cleveland. Taylor reports, via his twitter account, that police have told him that  the charges are going to be for “misdemeanor Possession of Controlled Substance.” Despite rumors around Twitter all this week regarding a pound of the marijuana, police say that the amount was 163.9 grams, which equates to over a third of a pound (0.36 lbs.) While this doesn’t convict Perez, it is not good news. The best hopes for Perez and the Indians had to be that there would be enough doubt that complaints wouldn’t be filed. Many Indians fans and commentators seemed to be putting hopes for Perez to avoid trouble on some reportedly shady history of the home that Perez and his wife rent in Rocky River. As of right now, it doesn’t appear that Perez will avoid charges. According the NORML, who tracks these sorts of things, the charges for possession and cultivation for between 100 and 200 grams in the state of Ohio is a 4th degree misdemeanor. The penalties are listed as incarceration of “not more than thirty days and/or fine” and the fine amount listed is $250. What remains to be seen is if there are any other charges relating to the fact that the substances in question allegedly came in the mail.
