In a move stunning to nobody, the Cleveland Indians finally cut ties with veteran pitcher Brett Myers. Signed to be the middle of the rotation innings eater, the 33-year old was a disaster from the beginning. Attempting to get himself back to being a starter after spending 2012 as a reliever for both Houston and the Chicago White Sox, Myers struggled in Spring and the hope was that he would turn it around once the season started. Instead, he made just three starts and four appearances where he was lit up for 10 home runs in 21.1 innings of work. His 8.02 ERA already had his spot in the rotation questioned, but the injury to his elbow got him first. Myers was placed in the DL with elbow tendinitis in late April and two failed rehab stints had the Tribe at the end of their ropes. Today, the Indians reinstated him from the 60-day DL and released him. The $7 million he received amounted to nothing on the field. The Myers signing was a huge miscalculation by the front office who were fortunate enough to have Corey Kluber’s breakthrough season overshadow the Myers debacle. The Tribe’s two, one-year guaranteed deal free agents – Myers and Mark Reynolds, both have been cut loose in the last three weeks. (related - Mark Reynolds designated for assignment)
