The Cleveland Indians have added to their stable of low-risk-with-potential-reward players by signing outfielder Jeremy Hermida. Outfielder Jeremy Hermida has reached agreement on minor league deal with #indians. Former BA Prospect Handbook cover boy. — Jerry Crasnick (@jcrasnick) February 4, 2013 Hermida, a former top prospect, provided a slash line of .250/.333/.375 across 27 plate appearances last season for the San Diego Padres. The 29-year-old left-hander was a first-round draft pick by the Florida Marlins. Baseball America rated Hermida as a top-30 prospect for three straight years, giving him the No. 4 overall ranking in 2006. Fun fact: Hermida is the only player to hit a grand slam in his first major league at-bat as a pinch hitter. So there’s that. This signing marks the second reclamation project for the Tribe this offseason. The team also signed Scott Kazmir, another once-top prospect who hit the skids earlier than anticipated. Hermida, naturally, never experienced as much success as Kazmir at the big-league level, but they were both regarded as elite prospects at one time before injuries got in the way.
