MLB Outsider is hosting a 2009 MLB mock draft, where bloggers from
all over come together in an attempt to project the draft results that
will take place June 9.
DC Pro Sports Report's Thomas Threlkeld picks for the Washington Nationals at No.1. To no surprise, the pick is RHP Steven Strasburg out of San Diego State. Follow the mock draft here.
Who wouldn't want Stephen Strasburg? He's a tall, rangy fireballing pitcher who is dominating fellow college players for his San Diego State Aztecs. He just won the Case Award as USA Baseball's Athlete of the Year. Strasburg is striking out over 19 batters per nine innings this season and his fastball regularly sends radar guns to 100 miles per hour and above. ESPN's Buster Olney quotes a veteran baseball scout as calling Strasburg the "best I've ever seen. And it's not even close." Strasburg's fastball has movement, his slider can get up into the mid-90s and he even throws a wicked change-up. That same scout says Strasburg could be in a Major League starting rotation at this very moment. "Right now, he's better than A.J. Burnett," says the scout.
