St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong was busy Saturday participating in the team’s annual Winter Warm-Up in the Gateway to the West.

Further west, Wong’s homeland of Hawaii was seemingly under attack. For a good 30 minutes, citizens of the island state were frantically preparing for a missile strike after officials sent out this erroneous warning.

It was about as scary of a situation anyone in the United States could possibly go through. And for Wong, his family in Hawaii was impacted in a big way.

Far away from the scene, Wong had no idea how to handle it. Who should he call? What members of his family were threatened the most?

“Honestly, I was in shock at first trying to figure out who to call, what to call,” he said, via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “Called my brother, he didn’t answer. He was frantically packing at the time. I called my dad. He just woke up because of the phone. It was a crazy situation.”

Just imagine what was going through Wong’s mind at the time. His brother. His dad. Both potentially facing a missile strike that some had concluded was coming from North Korea. Potentially of the nuclear variety.

“I was freaking out,” Wong said. “It’s something you don’t know what to do. A missile is basically coming to take out Hawaii. From what I’ve read and what I know about it, it takes 15 minutes for a missile to get from Korea to Hawaii.”

“It’s insane to be put in this situation and to think, ‘This could be the end.’ Just crazy time.”

Luckily for all involved and the future health of the world, this was nothing more than a false alarm. Even then, the scene in Hawaii was seemingly something out of a Michael Bay apocalyptic Hollywood blockbuster.

Thankfully, 'Rocket Man' didn’t send the missile our way. Thankfully, this was proven to be a false alarm before our own rocket man responded accordingly.

That still didn’t make it any less scary for all impacted in Hawaii and those close to them in the original 48.
