Could the Arizona Diamondbacks finally trade outfielder Justin Upton this offseason? They have talked about it for years now. In an offseason that could feature equally as many blockbuster trades as free agent signings, Upton could be one of many players who finds a new home for the 2013 MLB season.
Another player whose name is being mentioned a lot as of late is Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus. It would not surprise me in the least if Andrus is dealt this offseason, either for a starting pitcher or an outfielder to potentially replace free agent Josh Hamilton.
Gee, here is an idea. Why don’t the Diamondbacks trade Upton to the Rangers for Andrus? Texas could use Upton to replace Hamilton, and Arizona could use Andrus to replace Stephen Drew, who was traded to the Oakland Athletics during last season. It could be a nice fit for both.
Arizona has maintained for the past 18 months that it would be difficult for them to move Upton, but they would listen to any and all offers. If they can get a quality starter in return, plus a prospect or two, they will be hard pressed not to pull the trigger.
Andrus could certainly be such a player who could force the Diamondbacks to make such a move involving Upton.
Still just 25-years-old, Upton is scheduled to make $9.75 million next year, $14.25 million in 2014 and $14.5 million in 2015. He will not come cheaply, While the talent is clearly there, the production has not been for the past couple of seasons. many teams may be hesitant to believe that a change of scenery will make Upton that much better of a hitter.
Then again, 27 is that magic number where many scouts and general managers say that hitters often put it all together. If Upton can do that over the next few seasons, he could turn out to be a bargain.
Put him in the middle of the Rangers’ lineup in the Ballpark at Arlington and he may be able to reach his full potential sooner rather than later.
As of right now, Upton is believed to have four teams on his no-trade list, including the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians. While many believe that list has changed, it is not known whether or not the Rangers have been added or if any other teams have been subtracted.
