The Los Angeles Angels will look back on 2012 as a grace disappointment, especially after signing Albert Pujols and acquiring Zack Greinke, only to miss out on the playoffs altogether. Blowing 22 saves certainly did not help, and the Angels are acting quickly to repair the back end of their bullpen, looking to sign Ryan Madson to replace Ernesto Frieri as the team’s closer for the 2013 MLB season. After pitching so well for the Philadelphia Phillies in numerous roles throughout his career, Madson settled on a one year deal with the Cincinnati Reds in 2012, only to miss almost the entire season after having to undergo Tommy John surgery. Now expected to be healthy in 2013, the Angles are close to signing Madson to a one year guaranteed deal to serve as their closer. It is not that they do not like Frieri, but that he fell out of favor as a closer, and the team prefers him in the set up role, which is just fine with Madson, who wants the chance to close games again, like he did so well with the Phillies in his final season in Philadelphia. It was rumored that the Phillies actually looked into bringing back Madson to close for them in 2013, but a deal could not be reached. The Reds also tried to have Madson come back and do what they wanted of him in 2012, but it appears as if Cincinnati will focus on signing Jonathan Broxton to close instead, giving them the opportunity to move Aroldis Chapman from closer into the starting rotation. Even f the Angels do sign Madson, it is expected to be one of just many moves they make this offseason. After committing so much money to players last Winter, Los Angeles is going to ramp up their efforts to win another World Series even more heading into the 2013 campaign. The Angels are hoping that they can afford to bring back Greinke and sign him for the long term, and they may still look to add another arm or two beyond that. Starting with Madson, however, provided he can stay healthy this year, is not a bad way to open. Or close, in Madson’s case.   The post MLB Rumors: Will Los Angeles Angles Sign Ryan Madson To Replace Ernesto Frieri As Closer? appeared first on Hardball Chat Baseball Blog.
