Found July 31, 2012 on Cardinals Diaspora:
The MLB trade deadline came and went on Tuesday and the Cardinals were predictably silent. They did acquire RH relief pitcher Edward Mujica from the Miami Marlins for 2010 first round draft pick Zack Cox. So far Mujica is 0-3 with a 4.38 ERA in 2012. He has kept RH batters to a .211 average, though. Effectively positioning himself as the Cardinals replacement Kyle McClellan. Not exactly Larry Walker stuff here.Cox wasn’t exactly AAA and with David Freese proving himself to be a 130 game guy and the defacto face of the franchise, Cox was expendable. He wasn’t going to transition to 2B and the Cardinals are OK with corner OF depth. I’ll go ahead and wish him luck, even though it’s been since 2010 when I thought about Zack Cox.Meanwhile, around the NL Central the Reds made an impact moving by getting Jonathan Broxton from the Royals to set up Aroldis Chapman. Plus, the addition of Joey Votto in a couple weeks will be like acquiring a superstar via trade. The Reds have somehow surged to ...

Another angle on a Wainwright extension

Late last week, I laid out the top contracts of starting pitchers across Major League Baseball and compared them to what Adam Wainwright might make in 2014 and beyond. Polls were included that allowed readers to express your favored number of years, dollars and timing. Four years was the leader in the voting, with the money in the $17-$20 million per year range. That comparison...

Lohse, Holliday are heroes of win at Colorado

Kyle Lohse's streak of quality starts was snapped at 10 Tuesday night, but his offense bailed him out in a 11-6 win over Colorado that was Lohse's 11th against two losses. Lohse was sailing with a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth when he allowed a two-out single to former Cardinals reliever Adam Ottavino, who was batting for himself. Center fielder Eric Young also singled...

Have the Cardinals missed Pujols?

When Albert Pujols signed this past off-season with the Angels, the Cardinals responded by signing Carlos Beltran. The Beltran signing turned out to be a stroke of brilliance as the future Hall of Fame outfielder has had a great season. The Beltran signing also meant at the time that Lance Berkman would slide back to first where he is best suited and Berkman could deliver offense...

Holliday's 4 RBIs lift Cards past Rockies

DENVER (AP) -- Matt Holliday admittedly misjudged a first-inning fly ball that sailed over his head in left field for a double. The Cardinals slugger more than made up for it. Holliday homered, doubled and drove in four runs, and Kyle Lohse persevered through an erratic outing to win his fifth consecutive decision and lift St. Louis over the Colorado Rockies 11-6 on Tuesday night...

St. Louis Cardinals suddenly look like good team again

After a rough start to the second half of the season that included five losses in six games to the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers, the St. Louis Cardinals woke up and are back to looking like the team that led the NL Central through April. The Cardinals have lost just twice since leaving Milwaukee on July 18, and the upcoming schedule suggests they could go on a bit of a...

Right-handed reliever Edward Mujica was acquired by the Cardinals, who sent third baseman Zack Cox to the Marlins, according to the MLB Network. Mujica, 28, has a 4.38 ERA in 39 innings this season. He came to Miami along with outfielder Cameron Maybin in a deal with San Diego in 2010. Mujica missed two weeks during the first half of July recovering from a broken toe on his right...

Cardinals beef up bullpen with Mujica

The St Louis Cardinals again did what they did last year -- picked up some relief help for a highly thought of piece. They traded third baseman Zack Cox, the fourth best prospect in the organization, to the Miami Marlins in exchange for reliever Edward Mujica, reports Peter Gammons. The 28-year old Mujica has actually been a negative value reliever this year, thanks to a 4...
