You sort of knew something like this was going to happen; the details were all we were waiting on.

Well, wait no more, Tribe fans.  It appears that the division-leading Detroit Tigers have upgraded their team by trading for SP Anibal Sanchez and IF Omar Infante from the under-performing Miami Marlins.  The move was first reported by Jon Paul Morosi (I think):

#Tigers acquire Infante and A Sanchez from Marlins

Peter Gammons followed up on the original report with additional details:

1st draft pick deal:A Sanchez, Infante and comp balance pick for Jacob Turner, Rob Brantly, , Brian Flynn and Det. comp pick. Fascinating

Giving up Jacob Turner is supposedly significant, as he’s considered a high-end pitching prospect (despite getting absolutely torched by the Angels last week).1

But that’s a conversation for another day–a day that owner Mike Illitch knows he might not be around to see.

Today the Tigers filled their two biggest holes, and if they weren’t overwhelming favorites to win the division before this move, they sure look like it now.

  1. Another interesting–if not entirely significant–detail: this marks the first trade in MLB history of competitive balance draft picks.  Can you feel the parity, baseball fans???
