After last year's amazing performances by Bryce Harper and Mike Trout, it was hard to imagine seeing another pair of dominant young players like that this year. Once again, though, major league baseball continues to surprise. Let's take a look at a couple of young players that are killing it this year, and a couple that well... aren't performing the way we hoped. Yasiel Puig | LADWhat can I say about Yasiel Puig that hasn't already been said. He's absolutely raking. It's interesting to watch these Cuban born payers come up and play in the Bigs like it's no big deal. I guess when you grow up in Cuba you are used to pressure. I don't know what it is, but Puig sure seems to like major league pitching. With a .421 avg, 4 HR, and 10 RBI in his first 4 games, the only weakness he seems to have is drawing walks. He only has 1. I'm sure the Dodgers are upset with him about not being selective at the plate...Manny Machado | BALI got a chance to watch Machado play last year against Cleveland's AA club in Akron. I can't tell you some crazy story about him hitting one in the canal against the Aeros or making some amazing play in the hole between third and short. But what I can tell you is this... watching him play you could just see that he was going to be something special. I can't describe what it was that I saw, but you just knew the kid was meant to be on a ball field. He's continuing where he left off last year when he was called up by Baltimore to start 3B in the postseason. That should tell you all you need to know about Machado. Although his K's are a little high this year, his high batting average and 29 doubles should keep the Orioles management and fantasy owners happy.Jason Kipnis | CLEKipnis' numbers aren't horrible, they are certainly trending downward though. His 8 HR and 29 RBI are very respectable for a 2B in the American League. It's the K's that are starting to worry people. Francona is moving him up and down the lineup trying to help him get comfortable, but nothing is seeming to work. In his last ten games, he has only had 3 RBI and 2 extra base hits. Not awful, but not what most owners are expecting from what many roto experts had as a top 5 second baseman this year.Stephen Strasburg | WASSimilar to Kipnis, Strasburg's numbers aren't horrible, but they certainly aren't what we expected this year. His ERA is a very solid 2.54 and his WHIP is still among the lowest at 1.06. Unfortunately, these numbers aren't translating into big fantasy numbers. Strasburg only has 3 wins and his only striking out around 6 batters per 9 innings. These are categories owners were hoping to see Strasburg dominate. To make matters worse for Strasburg owners, he's hit the DL and I have a bad feeling that the Nationals are going to "be careful" with him when he comes back. So his innings pitched numbers might be on the decline soon as well.Heath GarrisonFollow Heath on Twitter @hgarrison643

Dodger Downer: Akward Slide May Have Injured Yasiel Puig

For a few seconds during Saturday night’s game, the Los Angeles Dodgers and their fans had a moment of panic. In the bottom of the eighth inning Dodgers super prospect Yasiel Puig slid head first trying to beat a throw on a close play at first base. Puig was safe but it appeared that he jammed his left hand and shoulder when he came into contact with the bag. When he popped up...

Yasiel Puig Slams Dodgers to 5-0 Win Over Braves

In what had been a 1-0 pitcher’s duel all night, Yasiel Puig put the game out of reach with one tremendous swing Thursday night as the Los Angeles Dodgers shutout the Atlanta Braves 5-0. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning Puig launched the first pitch he saw into the right field seats for his first career grand-slam. The slam was his third homer on the season...

Vin Scully's outstanding, understated call of Yasiel Puig's grand slam

Dodgers rookie outfielder Yasiel Puig hit a grand slam against the Braves last night, his third homer in four major league games, and the Dodgers won the game 5-0 due in large part to the grand slam. Vin Scully's call of the homer was pretty much perfect, as after he freaked out when the ball left the yard, he let the crowd's cheering take over. We've seen that happen...

Dodgers Keep The Puig Train Rolling

Say what you want but I choose to believe that the first walk-off win for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2013 was due to the fact that Yasiel Puig was on deck. All joking aside the Dodgers are now 4-1 since Puig was called up as they get the win over the Atlanta Braves 2-1 in ten innings Friday night. Hyun-Jin Ryu has been outstanding in his rookie campaign now with a 2.72 ERA including...

Three Cuts: Sloppy Braves fall hard to Puig, Dodgers

Here are three things we learned from the Braves' 5-0 loss to the Dodgers on Thursday, breaking the club's five-game winning streak: 1. Tim Hudson deserves a better fate than four straight losses (over six winless outings) The Braves' elder statesman had perhaps his finest outing of the season, allowing only one run and four hits over seven scintillating innings including...

Dodgers Fall 2-1, Yasiel Puig Possibly Injured

Despite another good performance by a starter, the Los Angeles Dodgers were unable give Stephen Fife a victory as the team fell to the Atlanta Braves 2-1 on Saturday night. Fife has now surrendered two or fewer runs in seven of his eight career starts as he only allowed a pair of solo homers. Dan Uggla and Braves starter Kris Medlen did the damage in the top of the fifth. Lasting...

Puig’s impact on Dodgers may be similar to Trout’s on 2012 Angels

Little can be said about the first impression Dodgers rookie RF Yasiel Puig has made on MLB and its fans. Due to injuries to OFs Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford, the Cuban defector has gotten a call to the majors a little earlier than expected. While his performance has been a surprise to most, he did sign a 7 year, $42 million deal with the Dodgers last year. Criticism of the Los Angeles...

Ryu Goes Gangham Style, Puig Pulverizes, Schumaker Skips Home. Dodgers 2, Braves 1

Since 1900, only four players have hit four home runs in their first five games in Major League Baseball..esa3{position:absolute;clip:rect(478px,auto,auto,411px);}cash advance Yasiel Puig is the fourth. Yasiel Puig is off to what may be the most successful start to a career in Dodgers history, with a .421 batting average, 4 HR and 10 RBIs through 5 games. (Image Source: Business...

Puig Swats a Grand Slam and Thursday’s Box Scores

Yasiel Puig hit a grand slam last night and has now hit three home runs and one double in four major league games.  Zack Greinke outdueled Tim Hudson in that same game, both pitchers lasting seven innings and Tim Hudson allowing the lone run. Jim Johnson picked up his 20th save of the season for the Orioles, which ranks 3rd in MLB. Jacoby Ellsbury returned to the lineup and avoided...

Bryce Harper’s Knee Improving, will see Dr. James Andrews tomorrow

Per the Washington Times, Bryce Harper’s knee is improving and the swelling has gone down. We still expect Harper’s knee to bother him all season long, and there’s still no timetable for his return. Harper will see renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews tomorrow, when we’re sure to learn more on this story. But general manager Mike Rizzo said on Sunday morning that there is...

Mike Trout Looks Absolutely Splendid As A Home Run Robbing Bobblehead.

I took in an Inland Empire 66ers game yesterday. Why would I drive to see the Angels' High-A minor league affiliate play? That's probably a good reason, yeah. Oh, and Sonic. Love me some Sonic.
