The Pirates fell to the Twins 5-4 on Monday, ending their quest for an undefeated Grapefruit League season. Oh well. They’ll be back at it on Tuesday  at 1:05 against the Orioles at McKechnie Field. MLB.com will have the audio feed for the game. The lineup and pitchers have already been announced; Wandy Rodriguez will get the start. Notable events from Monday’s loss: Kyle McPherson got through his two innings on just 15 pitches. He’s in a battle with Jeff Locke (who also pitched well on Saturday), so both rotation candidates are off to a good start. Jeanmar Gomez, a fringe candiate for a roster spot, did not pitch well. He allowed four runs and recorded just four outs. Jose Tabata went deep for the Bucs, and Travis Snider hit an RBI double. Other notes: Here’s a piece from FanGraphs stating that Neil Walker deserves a contract extension. Rob Biertempfel also wrote about this the other day for the Trib (the headline sort of implied it was news that they were nearing a deal, but it’s mostly just analysis and speculation). I’m confident that Walker will get an extension eventually (provided he doesn’t go into a significant decline), but there’s no rush to do so. He’s under team control through 2016 and there’s no reason the Pirates need to lock him up well in advance of that. Amazingly, the Pirates are still over .500 as a franchise despite 20 consecutive years of losing. 40,000 days ago, they were exactly .500.  Here’s the full Pirates minor league spring training roster. Minor leaguers are due in camp by March 3rd.
