St. Louis Cardinals
Carlos Martinez was the first starting pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals this spring, while that doesn’t mean much, could it be foreshadowing? Although not considered a rookie, Martinez has very limited experience at the major league level, including innings pitched. Will these factors help determine his role to start the season?
Let’s take a look at the three possible destinations for Carlos Martinez in 2014.
1. Starting Rotation of the St. Louis Cardinals
Many believe that Martinez would be best utilized pitching every 5th day along side Michael Wacha, Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn, and Shelby Miller. He has nasty stuff that could shut down opponents two to three times through the lineup. In his minor league career, Martinez has 68 appearances, with 67 of them as a starting pitcher. While there are other options to take Jaime Garcia‘s spot to start the season, Martinez is the most dynamic and has the highest upside. A concern is a possible innings limit. The Cards have said he will most likely be placed on one as he only threw roughly 120 innings in 2013. Another thought is the Cardinals’ bullpen may need him more than the rotation. A very young and somewhat inexperienced ‘pen could use the flamethrower setting up Trevor Rosenthal.
2. Bullpen of the St. Louis Cardinals
As I mentioned in the first section, Martinez may be needed late in games. Do you trust second year players Kevin Siegrist, Seth Maness, and Trevor Rosenthal? Of course you do, but can we really expect a repeat of 2013? Also will Jason Motte be ready for Opening Day? It is looking less likely. Also what should we expect from Pat Neshek? Will Randy Choate continue his dominance against lefties (.179 BAA in 2013)? A lot of questions, and while Martinez isn’t exactly a veteran, he would be another solid arm late in games. This option would also limit his innings, but would we see the full C-Mart only pitching a couple of innings a week?
3. Starting Rotation of the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds
The positives to this option include the ability to limit his innings while still sending him out there every 5th day. Also the Cardinals would delay his service time, thus pushing back a possible big payday. Also, Martinez could fine tune any command issues we may have seen at the end of the 2013 season while not making adjustments under the Busch Stadium lights. As I mentioned in last week’s poll question on where Oscar Taveras should start the season, if the big club is truly better with Martinez in either the starting rotation or the bullpen, he needs to be there. A farm system is not set up so the minor league teams can win championships. It is whatever is best for the big club.
So, you tell us, what role should Carlos Martinez have at the beginning of the 2014 season?

St. Louis Cardinals: 3 up and 3 downNearly the entire 2013 season, all the way up until the fourth game of the World Series, everything was fine for the St. Louis Cardinals. There were setbacks during the season, mostly injuries, but the Cardinals had an answer for just about every one of them. But the Cards finished the season on a losing streak, dropping the final three games of...
With minor leaguers reporting to Jupiter, Florida for spring training, it is time for another refresh of the St. Louis Cardinals system roster matrix. This version will reflect the changes made from the start of 2014 spring training until the opening of the regular season. The previous matrix reflects the rosters as they evolved from the conclusion of the 2013 season through the...
JUPITER, Fla. -- Michael Wacha's world changed more than a little between spring training a year ago and his 2014 exhibition debut on Sunday. As you might recall, he went from promising prospect to postseason hero with the speed of one of his fastballs.
But you know what hasn't changed? The demeanor of the 22-year-old right hander.
He remains as grounded as your front yard...
The St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins played a classic spring training game Friday to open their 2014 exhibition schedules, as each team used 26 players.
However, the Cardinals largely managed to avoid the traditional anonymity that turns the focus from names to the outrageously high numbers on the backs of the jerseys in the late innings of a February game in Florida.
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Judging from the nice ovation Cardinals shortstop Jhonny Peralta received before his first at-bat against his old team Monday afternoon, Tigers fans are going to miss him.
Based on what he did after the applause, they're going to miss him even more. On the first pitch he saw, Peralta smacked a no-doubt-about-it home run over the left-field fence. Second at-bat...

JUPITER, Fla. -- Adam Wainwright wants it. A clubhouse attendant would bring over a baseball from the opposing clubhouse for Chris Carpenter to autograph, often with a special request: "Please sign as 2005 Cy Young winner."
"Every time I saw him write that, I'd be like, 'That would be so cool,'" Wainwright says. "So I'm envious of that, no...
JUPITER, Fla. -- Matt Holliday doubled in both at-bats and drove in two runs Sunday for the St. Louis Cardinals in a 7-1 win over the New York Mets.
Holliday didn't play in the Cardinals' spring training opener on Friday. He singled and walked in two plate appearances as the designated hitter Saturday.
"I feel good," said Holliday, who played left field for the...
After dropping their first two against the Miami Marlins, the Cardinals took their first game on Sunday against the New York Mets. Mike Matheny, for the first time this spring, fielded a lineup that somewhat resembled what an opening day lineup might look like. The real stars of the game were the pitching staff. LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) Jhonny Peralta homered twice against his former team, going deep in his only plate appearances Monday in the St. Louis Cardinals' 8-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers.
Peralta played for the Tigers for 3 1/2 seasons before signing with St. Louis as a free agent this offseason. He said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny asked a couple days earlier if he wanted to make...
LAKELAND, Fla. -- With two swings of the bat, St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Jhonny Peralta hit more home runs than his former team, the Detroit Tigers, have had in seven Grapefruit League games.
It was quite a Joker Marchant homecoming for Peralta. The Tigers won, 8-5, on Monday but he stole the show by hitting his first two homers of the spring off the team he'd twice made the...
JUPITER, Fla. -- With Carlos Beltran leading the way, the Cardinals led the National League in offense from the second spot in the batting order last year.
But Beltran now is wearing Yankees pinstripes and the Cardinals have to figure out who will take his place in the order. The decision is the most intriguing one manager Mike Matheny has to make about his batting order.
Which prospects drew attention in St. Louis Cardinals major league spring training camp last week?
It was another dreary game for our Amazins as they headed down to Jupiter, Florida and lost to the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 7-1. The loss now has the Mets at 0-3 to begin the Grapefruit...
