It’s been said before. Melky Cabrera, unlike these guys, is young. Relatively young, at least. Age 27 is a magic age — an age when players typically enter their peaks. That he’s coming off his best season — .305/.339/.470, 121 OPS+ — at age 27 makes a world of difference. It’s quite possibly more than just a player performing above his true talent level — it could be an indication of a player that’s breaking out. Of course, more likely than not, that isn’t entirely the case. Cabrera was a mediocre (85 OPS+) hitter for the first 2700 plate appearances of his career, so why would the most recent 700 PAs discount that fact?
If you want proof that a breakout season at age 26 doesn’t necessarily hold over for the following year, check this out:

Giants Swap Jonathan Sanchez for Melky Cabrera
Kansas City Royals general manager Dayton Moore did what most fantasy baseball owners should do as well when it comes to trading, dealing from an area of strength in trading outfielder Melky Cabrera who had a career year in 2011 for starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez of the San Francisco Giants.
Sanchez gives the Royals a quality starter that, while he still struggles with his control...
Lorenzo Cain Will Get His Chance with the Royals
If there was one person who was absolutely ecstatic about the Melky Cabrera trade, it would be Mark Buehrle who Cabrera murders, and Royals prospect Lorenzo Cain.
Cain was acquired in the Zack Grienke deal last winter along with the slick fielding speed demon Alcides Escobar. He seemed to be a lock to play for a rebuilding Kansas City club. At 25, Cain thought he was finally going...

Potential FA Target: Andrew Brackman
I was going to analyze the Melky Cabrera/Jonathan Sanchez + Ryan Verdugo trade, but to be honest I feel like that’s been done by a lot of people and it’s all pretty much been said. Quick take: Cabrera doesn’t seem to be a great fit in San Francisco because his defensive liabilities could really be exposed in a ballpark with that large of an OF and a primarily flyball...
What The Melky Trade Means For The Giants
The Giants sent Jonathan Sanchez and pitching prospect Ryan Verdugo to the Royals Monday for outfielder Melky Cabrera. At first we thought the Giants were overpaying -- and eating into an already depleted stable of quality minor league arms. But, when it comes down to it, Melky fills a major hole for the big club. We say this deal is a win for the Giants. Here's why.
Lorenzo Cain Gets His Shot
Melky Cabrera was traded earlier today to the San Franciso Giants for left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez and Double-A pitcher Ryan Verdugo. In 2010 Sanchez went 4–7 with a 4.26 era
