The Mariners like to talk about the turnaround they envision as a young club grows into something better.

Just looking at the record -- 50-57 and in last place in the American League West after Wednesday's 5-3 win over Toronto -- there is reason to believe that the club isn't getting that much better.

After 107 games last year, the Mariners were slightly worse -- 45-62 -- than they are now.

The feeling on the two clubs, however, couldn't be more dissimilar.

At this time a year ago, the Mariners were getting over a 6-20 July that included a franchise record 17-game losing streak.

This time around, the Mariners went 15-11 in July, including going 13-6 from the All-Star break through the end of the month.

Seattle starting pitchers have had everything to do with the turnaround. For the month, they posted a combined 2.73 ERA, almost one run better than their 3.57 ERA for the month of June.

The Mariners may not have as many big names in the rotation as in other years, but they just finished with the best single-month ERA in franchise history, eclipsing the 2.81 mark from September/October 1993.

The month of August got off to a solid start, too, with Blake Beavan throwing 7 2/3 innings of three-run ball against the Blue Jays.
