PLAYERS: Bud Selig

Via Larry Brown Sports:

Bug Selig has done a tremendous job of dragging his heels when it comes to introducing new technology like expanded instant replay to Major League Baseball. Part of that is a generational issue. Selig is 78 years old and cut from the old school, which is why he has stressed the importance of keeping the “human element” of the game intact even if it means less accurate outcomes.

Selig has said he is going to retire in 2014, and that may end up being best for the game. Especially if the guy is telling the truth about sending an email.

Is that even possible? I guess when you’re in a position of power for such a long time, you have people who send emails for you. But my grandmother is 87 and even she loves texting and emailing so she can stay in touch. Has Selig never had to do that?

If the instant replay thing didn’t make sense to you before, perhaps it will now.

Bud Selig is 78 years old. Like many septuagenarians, it probably holds that he doesn’t understand modern technology quite as well as those of us on the sweet side of 30. However, as the commissioner of Major League Baseball, Selig is inevitably in a position that requires a great deal of understanding of modern innovation. Between instant replay, PED testing and Internet video...

Bud Selig Says Olympic Break “Isn’t Possible”

Will the Washington Nationals  Bryce Harper or the Los Angeles Dodgers Yasiel Puig get their shot at Olympic glory? Probably not says MLB commissioner Bud Selig. Baseball was voted out of the 2012 Summer Olympics by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) in 2005. If the sport returns in 2020 as petitioned, Americans will have little interest. Selig said Tuesday there would...

Dave Letterman Grills Bud Selig

There are nights when David Letterman looks like he's just going through the motions, and let's face it...30-plus years behind the desk will do that to a man.  But, when he's genuinely interested, like he was Monday with baseball commissioner Bud Selig, he's one of the best out there. Switch pitcher could see action in MLB

29-year-old New York Yankees minor leaguer Pat Venditte normally wouldn’t be a player worth noticing. He’s been in the minors for the past seven seasons after the Yankees selected him in the 45th round of the 2007 amateur draft.  On the surface, Venditte is nothing more than your non-prospect who has bounced around in small towns in an attempt to make it to the Majors. That’s...

Japanese H.S. game goes 50 innings before winner decided

Hard to believe, but Mark Townsend of Yahoo Big League Stew reports that a high school “Rubber Baseball” game in Japan went a full 50 innings, or 5.6 full length games before being decided 3-0 (no scoring the first 49 innings).  The winner was Chukyo High School over Sotoku in the tournament semifinal game. Some of the stats are almost too much to be true.  According to Townsend...

Oakland Raiders fielding oldest roster in NFL

The Raiders spent the offseason loading up on a slew of veteran talent, a calculated effort to inflate their win total. To nobody's surprise, it's subsequently inflated the team's collective age. Report: Sam clears waivers, can join an NFL practice squad

ST. LOUIS — Michael Sam was probably never an ideal fit with the St. Louis Rams and it had absolutely nothing to do with his sexual orientation. They’re just too well-stocked at defensive end, Sam’s position. Sam showed up for his face-to-face exit meeting with coach Jeff Fisher Sunday, a few hours after clearing waivers. He shook hands with two reporters and accepted well...
