TEAMS: Chicago Cubs

Via Cosby Sweaters:

Wrigley Field is due for a makeover, and it looks like it will be getting a pretty great one. Check out the photos of the proposed new renovations which will cost around $300 million dollars and take five years to finish. The changes will include overhauls of concessions, bathrooms, and even a new clubhouse for the players.   According to the teams study and research, the overhaul would create 2,100 jobs and bring in $1.2 billion of new revenue for the city of Chicago and for the Cubs.   The renovation is penciled in for the fall of 2014 if the Cubs can get approval from the city of Chicago.  The Cubs announced their plans at the Cubs Convention during a presentation given by Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney.

“We listened to you, and your love for this ballpark came through loud and clear,” Kenney said. “Your input was put into this ballpark, and what you see is the direction we’re heading.”

Kenney also made mention of the issues which the Cubs are facing in paying for the expensive face-lift.

“In most ballparks, if you’re a publically funded facility like our friends on the South Side, there’s an amusement tax, Kenney said. “…If this is such an asset (to the community) and we’re being restricted, we need some help. If they want to treat us like the other 29 (privately owned) clubs, where we can play games whenever, have advertisements, the Rickets will be prepared to write the check.”

Couple things from the Cubs Convention

The guys at Vine Line got me a ticket to this year's convention.Because they're awesome. In the past I always arrived late to that Saturday morning meeting with the GM and Manager, ended up standing in the back of the crowded ballroom getting pictures of the backs of Cub fan's heads.I thought with Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer, Dale Sveum and Shiraz Rehman, I should finally...

Cubs Rumors: Alfonso Soriano Wants to Remain in Chicago

There have been several trade rumors swirling around Chicago Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano this offseason, but the veteran told Carrie Muskat of MLB.com that he hopes to remain with the club and be a part of their next winning team. Epstein won't waver from Cubs' long-term plan

Although the Chicago Cubs are coming off a 61-101 season, team president Theo Epstein sounded an optimistic tone in recent days as the team's push toward spring training heated up. "It's postseason or bust every year," Epstein said. "That's what our goal is." If teams and their executives, even realistic ones like Epstein, can't be optimistic...

Jeff Samardzija under the radar

After years of being the golden boy and fan favorite who couldn't quite get there, Jeff Samardzija arrived as a starter in 2012. His record and ERA perhaps belittle the type of season he really had. His record of 9-13 with an ERA of 3.89 in 28 starts might not excite anyone. If you dig a little deeper, there was a lot of impressive stuff about his season considering it was his...

Are the Cubs looking to make amends with Sammy Sosa?

On paper, Sammy Sosa is one of the greatest Chicago Cubs of all-time. The 7-time All-Star mashed 609 homers while maintaing a .273 batting average during his 18-year MLB career. Fans loved him, team owners wanted him, and sports writers awed over him. At least until allegations of performance-enhancing drugs surfaced at the tailend of his playing days.Sosa's link to steroids...

The Chicago Cubs announced a five-year, $300 million plan to renovate Wrigley Field at the annual Cubs convention on Saturday. Player Profile #140: Anthony Rizzo | 1B | CHC

On more than one occasion I’ve been asked the following question: “Would you rather keep Eric Hosmer or Anthony Rizzo?” Well, Rizzo appears first in our countdown for 2013, so if this season is your primary concern, then I’d say Hosmer. But to be perfectly honest, I like Rizzo a lot more than I thought I would just one year ago. In 2011, Rizzo stepped to the plate 153 times...

Another Cubs Convention Has Come and Gone

Another Chicago Cubs Convention has come and gone, and all that we are left with are the memories of the annual celebration and kick off to the upcoming baseball season. Like most years, the convention was filled with fans all dressed in their Cubby best, packing the halls waiting to meet their favorite Cub players from today and from yesteryear. What was not the same though, was...

Shark Month

Deconstructing an awful month for a pretty good pitcher. Yankees bench Derek Jeter

Things have hit rock bottom in the Bronx.  In what should be a celebratory month of Derek Jeter‘s career (and potential final postseason appearance), the New York Yankees are just about out of options to make the playoffs.  One last option was exercised today.  Bench Derek Jeter.  Not demote him out of the number two spot.  Not give him a day of rest.  Benched.  The American...

The New York Jets could have made a game-tying touchdown in the match against the Packers, however, a timeout error of course made the situation complicated for the Jets, as usual.
