There was a time where it didn’t matter what a guy did in terms of breaking the rules in baseball, you didn’t give your opinion. The union was the voice for the player in question. That’s no longer the case, as many Major League Baseball players continue to speak out against those that allegedly used performance-enhancing drugs which came from the Miami-based clinic called Biogenesis. Specifically, Alex Rodriguez.

Tampa Bay Rays star Evan Longoria is not the least bit pleased that A-Rod is getting an opportunity to continue playing as the appeals process goes on, and said so very publicly in a podcast with Sports Illustrated’s Jimmy Traina:

I don’t think it’s fair for the other teams, because I’m in the American League East. Whether he is 100 percent or not, whether his mind is where it needs to be or not, he can affect the game in a positive way. He can affect the game in a tremendous way, which is being in the lineup. In a pennant race, he’s a guy you don’t want in the lineup. Looking at it from that perspective and that perspective only, I don’t think it’s fair that we can’t have an arbitrator hear the case sooner.

If you get in a bench clearing brawl and a guy punches another guy and is ejected from the game and gets a 10-game suspension, you appeal that and it’s heard in the next three weeks. You either get 10 games or six games or whatever. I don’t understand why that process can’t happen for this.

I pick up what Longoria is putting down, but this is the process that was collectively agreed to by MLB and the MLBPA. While Longoria may be right in the unfair advantage that A-Rod could give to the Yankees, you can’t fault the guy for fighting a suspension that is four-times longer than anyone else received. If someone was wrongly punished, would it be fair for them to sit out several games? Certainly not. This is as much of a rule as anything else.

I would venture a guess that at some point today, if not already, Longoria received a call from Michael Weiner, the director of the MLBPA. He will be told to keep his mouth shut, as he discredits the union with these types of words. In the past, the non-steroid users didn’t want testing, and fought alongside guys they knew were juicing. The MLBPA has always been known to be the strongest of all the sports unions, but all the anonymous comments and vocal ones like Longoria will create cracks in it, and that cannot happen.

  • OK Let him play. Now if he is found guilty any money or games won by him are negated. If your guilty and you appeal and get to play no money no stats till proven innocent
  • NOT FAIR ?!?!?!

The MLBPA...THE PLAYER'S ASSOCIATION FOUGHT against any kind of drug testing for Decades.

BLAME YOURSELVES and the MLBPA...this is YOUR fault because you WANTED to protect those doing drugs/PEDs
  • Why should he get away with it...he should not be playing or earning money...he needs to realize he is not above the rules. Many other people are being held accountable for similar actions.
  • he should have been given the same punishment as everyone else so keep fighting if he was given the same punishment there would be no need to fight in the end that will probably be what he gets anyway
  • Zero tolerance for all players in all sports that are caught using PHD's. Don't go to the games that they play in and management will respond accordingly. ZERO TOLERANCE!!!!!!!!! RAYMOND
  • The Yankees have been a 1st class team forever we don't need
people of dubious character playing this game.
  • rodriguez is entitled to due process.... so he should be able to play until that process has been completed....
  • He is not appealing his guilt or innocence, he is appealing the length of his suspension, what does due process have to do with that?
  • Longoria should concentrate on Baseball ARod can't hit anymore, needs pinch hitters in playoff games, and sits on the bench more than plays. That is punishment enough.
  • I agree, He should not be able to play !!!! And it should not take that long for appeal !!!
  • Longoria, should get over himself, do your job don't worry about anyone else, hey have you been tested?
  • Longoria is probably cheating to he just has not been caught yet
  • everybody should give it a rest. this could be you or you. I am glad your not in afganistan, you woul not back up your buddies
  • Personally, I think AFraud probably juiced. I think all juicers are unworthy of the uniform and should receive lifetime bans. That said, there's a presumption of innocence until proven guilty, same as in our courts, so we have to let the system do its job - the same as we'd want for ourselves. Anyone guilty of using PEDs should lose all awards received during his career and be ineligible for the HOF. You can't overturn games won because that would unfairly penalize the other members of the team.
  • worse than longoria crying are some of the people on ESPN and radio stations saying how the athletes involved should never be allowed into the hall of fame and so on. being a Red Sox fan 1 particular sportscaster sticks out, Dale Arnold. he talks as if he is far and above a better person than most and says the roid athletes are cheaters. coming from a so called sports writer that sounds disingenuous. these writers and sportscasters make their living off of knowledge of sports and their players. to try to make it sound as if he is shocked that so many players are or were doing roids is ridiculous. he nad many other writers must have been living on Fantasy Island or with Alice in Wonderland to not have some idea of the amount of roids in pro sports. bodybuilders were doing it in the 60's, and football players we know were using in the 70's. so to act like it is a shock in 2000 and up that baseball is dirty is funny at best. more accurate is probably they just did not want to sully the name of the game they looked up to.
  • If you don't think A-Rod should be playing, complain to your players union - they filed the appeal that the Roid wanted filed.
  • It is in the collective bargaining agreement, so it must be followed. I would recommend that MLB seek an amendment to the contract: A player may not play pending an appeal, if the appeal results in the player being found "not guilty" of the alleged infraction, the team may pay the player. If the punishment is reduced upon appeal, the time the player has already been suspended will count towards the punishment.

This would reflect a policy similar to the Criminal Justice system. (if enough players feel as Longoria does, the player's association will accept the change; if Longoria is in the minority, then the rule will not change.
  • A-Rod should get his appeal. The rules determined by collective bargaining allow A-Rod to play. Longoria should focus on the game or become a commentator.
  • The baseball union is the most corrupt and powerful union in the US. They keep baseball as a haven for juicers and screw the honest players
  • Maybe Longoria hasnt watched A-Rod in awhile. Trust me, he does not give our team any advantage hahaha.
  • Take a bow and get the fuc* out you cheating looser.
You are the only one that did not accept the punishment and they knew it.
You can't even be honest with your self and your fans.
Respect the intelligence of your fans, (which aren't too many),
    Be a man A-Rod.
Not like the MLB owners and Execs. Pure greedy scumbag pieces of dog sh*t.
  • I agree with him 100%

The good, the bad and the ugly in A-Rod’s return to the New York Yankees

Amid the tumult and turmoil of the Biogenesis investigation, Alex Rodriguez insisted he just wanted to get back on the field. The baseball diamond has always been a sanctuary for the troublemaking slugger, a place where he can perform without acting, and act without trying to perform. He has taken his show to many theatres, but the ball field seems to be the one life arena in which...

The A-Rod Anti-Highlight Reel has derps, ‘You’re the Best Around’ soundtrack (video)

Boo-birds will be out at Yankee Stadium as A-Rod puts the pinstripes back on

He has next to nothing to do with the Yankees’ season being finished by the first week of August. The Yankees are disciplining A-Rod for seeking a second opinion on his quad

It all seems so quaint compared to his 211-game suspension by Major League Baseball but Alex Rodriguez is being disciplined by the Yankees for seeking a second opinion on his strained quad without authorization from the team reports Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York. This arises out of that fun little controversy in July when A-Rod had Dr. Michael Gross examine his MRI and then go...
