During the bottom of the eighth inning of the game between the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field on Wednesday night, a fan flashed some sweet catching skills in capturing a foul ball off the bat of Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak.
With the ball descending down on him, the young man utilized the only thing he had in his possession that could be used in place of a glove: his beer cup.
With his pals jockeying for position under the foul ball, he snatched the ball out of their respective clutches by catching it his glass. And then, without any regard for the dirty ball floating in his cup of suds, proceeded to slam his beer in classic brewski-slugging fashion.
Does Mariners-Astros not sound like a great matchup? The rosters may not have a lot to offer, but boy, the fans can bring a show.
A fan made up for the many empty seats around him Wednesday night by using the old beer-cup-catch on a Justin Smoak foul ball. He then completed the moment in perfect form, chugging his sudsy beverage with no regard to what could happen to his fine-looking...
Aces and closers aplenty
Before the regular season we took a look at the best positional prospects in the Mariners farm system. Today we take a look at Seattle’s crown jewel: the pitching prospects.
It’s well known that the M’s have three of the best pitching prospects in baseball. That trio has been dubbed “the big three,” and consists of starters James Paxton, Taijuan...
Although we've seen moments like this before, baseball fans have always been the most creative in catching foul balls.
During last night's Seattle Mariners/Houston Astros game, one fan caught a foul ball off the bat of Seattle's Justin Smoak in his beer and decided to finish off his brew that help scored him a souvenir:

Mariners right fielder Michael Saunders has sprained his right shoulder crashing into the outfield wall to make a catch.
He will be re-examined Thursday and the team says Saunders is expected to miss ''some time.''
Saunders left Wednesday night's game against Houston in the first inning after running down a deep drive hit by leadoff batter Jose Altuve. Saunders...
A Seattle Mariners fan caught a foul ball in his cup of beer and then chugged it down. This guy's nonchalant 8th inning catch with his plastic, beer-filled glove was a little messy but still garnered raves from the announcers, a loud roar of approval from the crowd and high-fives from his buds.
These kind of grab-and-guzzles are becoming pretty commonplace and it's time...
In a game that took three hours and 36 minutes we saw rookie M's pitcher Brandon Maurer get knocked around early tonight and the Mariners could never recover.
The Astros' 22 hits tied for the sixth most in club history.
A small comeback was underway in the bottom of the 9th. The M's sent 8 batters up and put up four runs but it was just to much to come back from...
We’re still in April, but by season’s end you’ll be hard-pressed to find a stranger baseball score than Astros 16, Mariners 9 at Safeco Field on Tuesday night.
First off, it was a cold night in a pitcher’s park with two inept offenses. And not even that basic descriptor does this thing justice. Games like this are what give Tim Kurkijan a mega-boner. To wit:
- The first...
Mixed-league roto owners, looking for a waiver-wire pitcher before Friday's full slate of games?
Here's my free-agent choice (citing most 12-team leagues) for one day of fantasy stardom:
Hisashi Iwakuma, Mariners (vs. Rangers)
1. In two starts this season, spanning 14 innings, Iwakuma has a 2.57 ERA, 0.43 WHIP and letter-perfect K-BB rate of 100.
2. Of his 32 career appearances...
Casper Wells claimed by the Blue Jays
The Seattle Mariners tried to get Casper Wells thru MLB waivers and it didn't pan out. The squabbling and struggling Toronto Blue Jays grabbed him today first reported by Peter Gammons.
Jason Bay of course beat him out during Spring Training for an extra outfield spot on the roster...
The injuries are piling up for the Seattle Mariners. Yesterday, Seattle placed Michael Saunders on the disabled list after he made a running catch and slammed into the wall. Saunders suffered a sprained shoulder and will be out at least two weeks. Now, the club says Michael Morse could miss a week with a fractured pinkie.
Morse was hit by a pitch in last night's contest...
Jose Altuve drove in four runs and hit one of Houston's five homers, and the Astros broke out of their offensive slump with a 16-9 win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.
After totaling nine runs during a six-game losing streak, the Astros scored nine in just six outs and won for the first time since opening night. The smallest crowd in Safeco Field history saw the Astros...
Mariners to acquire Aaron Harang?
FOX MLB Reporter & senior baseball writer at the MLB Network Ken Rosenthal just tweeted that the M's are close to acquiring pitcher Aaron Harang.
He says the Rockies and the Mariners are working through final details, including approval from commissioner's office.
As a team, the Houston Astros only scored 17 runs through the first 7 games. They also only had 5 doubles and 2 home runs. They erupted Tuesday night against the Seattle Mariners with 16 runs on 22 hits, 8 of which were extra base hits.Astros 16 Mariners 9The Astros got a nice start from Erik Bedard who threw 4 innings allowing just 1 hit and 2 walks before leaving with an undisclosed...
