The Giants on Wednesday sent reliever George Kontos down to Triple-A, the same day he also found out he was suspended three games and fined an undisclosed amount by MLB for hitting Andrew McCutchen with a pitch on Tuesday. It’s also his birthday. Happy birthday, George Kontos!

The Giants right-hander turned 28 on Wednesday, and as you can tell it’s been a pretty terrible b-day. Hopefully he at least gets some cake by the end of the day.

Kontos was tossed when he plunked McCutchen in the eighth of Tuesday’s loss to the Pirates, two batters after he was warned for throwing behind Sterling Marte. Bruce Bochy also got the boot and was suspended for one game, which he’s serving on Wednesday.

Kontos, who surrendered three runs before getting the heave, has a 5.76 ERA this season in 31 appearances after a solid season a year ago. He’s been replaced by right-hander Sandy Rosaro. The suspension is only applicable to the majors, so Kontos can’t begin to serve it until he’s called up again. He’s always allowed to appeal it.

Surprisingly it’s not even the worst birthday Kontos has had since becoming a pro. He tore a ligament in his elbow while pitching four years ago and needed Tommy John surgery.

“So this is the second worst thing that’s happened on my birthday,” he said.

Let’s hope his Christmases are more fun.

Marco Scutaro faces tough decision with injured pinky finger

Looks like Marco Scutaro can return to baseball sooner than most were expecting after he took a pitch to his pinky finger Tuesday night. But he has a crucial choice to make. No, this isn’t some Ronnie Lott-type business where amputation is being discussed. It’s much less grisly than that, but appearance is still weighing heavily in his decision.
