Josh Hamilton was introduced by the Angels on Saturday, two days after it was reported that he agreed to a five-year, $125 million deal with his new team. While the Rangers were disappointed that Hamilton decided to sign with the rival Angels without giving them a chance to match the contract offer, Hamilton’s wife is using a dating analogy to add some perspective to the situation.

According to Hamilton’s wife, Katie, Texas’ big mistake was that they let her husband flirt with other teams.

“My take was, we were with them for five years,” Katie Hamilton said at her husband’s introductory press conference Saturday, via CBS Sports. “If you’re going to date somebody and they’re going to be your man or your woman, you make it official pretty quick that you want to be with them.

“The fact that they let us date other teams … Josh said he’d let them have first choice. But they let us date others and give our hearts away.”

Said Josh: “She said they should have put a ring on it,” which is a reference to a 2008 Beyonce song.

Josh seemed to be in agreement with his wife.

“I’d be lying if I said it didn’t bother me a little bit that they didn’t put the press on,” he said of Texas.

I think that’s the point Hamilton’s agent was trying to make when he said they did not give Texas a right to match; the Rangers had plenty of time to get a deal done, and they didn’t.

Hamilton said Saturday he is not worried that being in Anaheim and nearby Los Angeles will have an impact on his ability to avoid temptation. His accountability partner with the Rangers, Shayne Kelley, reportedly will be joining him in Anaheim.

Hamilton was also full of jokes at his introductory press conference in Anaheim Saturday. When asked about avoiding an early-season slump like last year’s free agent addition, Albert Pujols, Hamilton cracked a funny.

“Albert ain’t got my pop,” he joked.

Angels fans are hoping the fun attitude continues during the season.

As for me, I have mixed feelings on the signing. I get giddy when thinking about a 3-4 combination of Pujols and Hamilton back-to-back. But then I question how many games Hamilton will be healthy for considering his penchant for hitting the disabled list with various issues. I even wonder if Hamilton will still be in baseball in five years. Still, it’s hard not to get excited about your team signing a former MVP who is one of the best hitters in baseball. I think this move puts the Angels ahead of the Rangers in the AL West race.

1 Comment:
  • Josh Hamilton's wife needs to understand that thousands of fans of the Texas Rangers are happy Josh is else where. Josh will find places to spend all that cash. I just hope the Angels don't mind the quiting when Josh does not get his way. The Rangers looked after him more than any other player in Ranger history, hopefully the Ranger front office has learned a lesson.

Hamilton, Angels finalize 125M, 5-year deal

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Feeling "a little upset" that Texas didn't move quickly enough to re-sign him, free-agent outfielder Josh Hamilton donned a Los Angeles Angels jersey on Saturday after finalizing a 125 million, five-year contract that he called a new chapter in his life. "I started off with the Devil Rays and now I'm an Angel," said the five-time All...

How Halos nabbed Josh Hamilton

ANAHEIM, CA I started out with the Devil Rays and now Im an Angel, said a smiling Josh Hamilton during his first news conference as a member of the Angels. Thats exactly what it...

Why Josh Hamilton May Be a Downgrade For The Angels

You probably think I’m crazy don’t you? Or worse, you think I’m going to make some sort of tasteless assumption that Josh Hamilton going to LA will lead him back to his past addictions. So how on Earth can Josh Hamilton – the 2010 AL MVP; the first free agent coming off a 40-HR, 120-RBI season since Alex Rodriguez; the man with talent seemingly on loan from God – be a downgrade...

Hamilton and wife take shots at Rangers, “should have put a ring on it”

What could the Texas Rangers have done if they wanted to re-sign Josh Hamilton? “She said they should have put a ring on it.” said Hamilton at his introduction on Sunday. Hamilton was his typical joking self in the press conference but expressed disappointment that he was not perused by the Rangers with more aggression. “I gave them everything I had for five years,” Hamilton...

Angels hire Josh Hamilton's 'accountability partner' from Rangers

The Los Angeles Angels are into Josh Hamilton for five years and $125 million and, although team owner Arte Moreno said there was "no special language" in the outfielder's contract citing consequences for a potential drug or alcohol relapse, the team will take extra steps to keep the admitted addict on the straight and narrow. One of the first moves is hiring Hamilton...

Josh Hamilton To L.A.? Tomorrow Never Knows

It’s been a spontaneous year in Los Angeles Angels baseball, first with the signing of Albert Pujols to kick off the year, then the coming of age of Mike Trout throughout the summer. Links of the Day 12/14/12

Incidents in Connecticut this morning remind us of what a frightening world this can be. My thoughts and condolences to anyone affected by the tragedy. Josh Hamilton signed with the Angels, and Torii Hunter was not happy about it. This is some serious dedication. Brandon McCarthy has a serious Twitter problem. SCOREBOARD Nothing last night

Daily Friar 12.14.12

The biggest prize in the free agent market is now off the table. I guess the Angels were tired of sitting back and watching the Dodgers grab everybody they wanted for themselves. So yesterday, the Angels signed Josh Hamilton to a 5 year, 125 million dollar contract. This comes off of last years signing of Albert Pujols to a 10 year deal. Interesting to note too that Torii Hunter...
