From The Outside Corner:

How's this for a pair of playoff moments? The Yankees trailed the Orioles 2-1 going into the bottom of the ninth in Wednesday's ALDS game three. Baltimore's closer Jim Johnson was on the mound looking to finish the Yankees off and give the Orioles a 2-1 series lead, but Raul Ibanez had other ideas. Yankees manager Joe Girardi sent Ibanez up to pinch hit for Alex Rodriguez, and Ibanez smashed the second pitch he saw from Johnson over the right field fence to the tie game up at two.

But Ibanez wasn't done yet. He led the 12th inning off against Brian Matusz, and Ibanez smashed the first pitch he saw from Matusz deep to right and out of the park, giving the Yankees a 3-2 walkoff win and a 2-1 lead in the series. Whenever something good happens in Yankee Stadium, you can go ahead and blame the ghosts of Yankee history, which apparently haven't been brought down along with the old Yankee Stadium.

Yankeetorial: Last night, in the cosmic image of Raul Ibanez, did we fans everywhere just uncover the secret to life?

Last night, I watched eight innings from under the couch. Finally, I'd made spiritual peace with the loss, with the end of the season, with the incredible waste of time and energy that baseball represents, with my mortality, with my inconsequential status in the universe, and with the fact that I would never again taste a Yankee championship - yes, folks, I was broken down to...

Raul Ibanez’s Historic Clutch Evening

Raul Ibanez batted twice tonight. He hit a game tying home run in the ninth, then a game winning home run in the 12th. His WPA for the game: .827. We only have postseason data going back to 2002, but from our records, this is the second best single game WPA in that stretch, trailing only David Freese‘s amazing performance from Game 6 of the World Series last year. Freeseâ€...

Vote: Should Raul Ibanez Start Over Alex Rodriguez for the Yankees in Game 4?

For one night, Raul Ibanez was the greatest hitter of all time. Pinch-hitting for Alex Rodriguez -- who many predicted would someday hold that title -- in the bottom of the ninth, Ibanez launched a home run into the right-field stands at Yankee Stadium to tie the game. Then, improbably, impossibly, he hit another in the 12th inning, sending New York into a frenzy and the Yankees...

Raul is cool, A-Rod gets pulled, and the Yankees win

What a night! Squawker Jon and I were on the phone in the ninth inning, when we saw that Raul Ibanez had taken Alex Rodriguez's place in the lineup. We barely had time to digest it when we saw that Ibanez hit a homer to tie the game. Then, to make things even more unbelievable, he of course did something that has never been done in a postseason game before -- hitting a home run...

Father of Yankees manager passes away

The father of New York Yankees manger Joe Girardi has died, the team announced Thursday. Jerry Girardi passed away Saturday at a residential health-care facility in Metamora, Ill. Orioles suddenly failing in all phases

Coming into Wednesday night's ALDS Game 3 at Yankee Stadium, the Baltimore Orioles were 16-2 in extra-inning games on the year -- a blemish-free 16-0 against everyone but the New York Yankees, and 0-2 against the one team standing between them and their first playoff series win in 15 years. Make that 0-3. In one of the most improbable postseason finishes in baseball history...

In the cold air of the morning after

Last night was a bitter pill to swallow. It was a hard, swift kick to the collective bellend of the greater Baltimore area. For at least the next 10 hours, we will hear about the Yankee mystique and the majesty of the greatest franchise in baseball's history. The New York Yankees have had so many moments like last night's in their history that they could fill a library...

Expect Yankees manager Joe Girardi to make lineup changes

The Yankees may be forced to make lineup changes for today's deciding game five against the Orioles in the elimination game. They may take Alex Rodriguez and Curtis Granderson out of the starting lineup and replace with Eric Chavez and Raul Ibanez. A-Rod and Granderson have been terrible in this entire series going 3 for 30 combined versus Orioles pitching. That's why...

Daily Friar 10.11.12

What an exciting night for baseball fans. It's not too often you get two walkoff wins in one night, when there are only four games being played. This year seemed to be that way. There are two games that are extremely close, then the other two are blow outs. This was exactly the same case last night as the A's and the Evil Empire walked off, while the Giants and Cards had...
