On Monday, NBA player Jason Collins came out as gay, and by doing so, made himself the first active openly homosexual male athlete in any of the four major American team sports. The Boston Red Sox noticed...inviting the onetime Boston Celtics center (Collins donned the green and white earlier this season) to Fenway Park. Interestingly enough, it is the Red Sox who are widely regarded as having been the last Major League team to have integrated.  So, um...progress?

  • boston the land of the gays and strays, queers and steers, going to burn all my garb now and stop watching the sox.
  • Good, thank you. We don't want anyone like you wearing anything representing our city.
  • Agreed kjd100!
  • Jesus loves you as you are! With that said,...i believe we pray for one another to walk towards Christ everyday,...but know we are human/sinners, not perfect...He knows this and forgives us always...
Know that with out Him in our lives, we are bound for destruction.
This is what is happening to our great country,..."how dare we speak about God in public,.. but yet, we are to praise and stand up for this Gentlemen because he announces his sexual preference?
I open MSN this morning and find an announcement about a hero,...where is the announcement about the National Day of Prayer,...I ask everyone today to pray for this great nation for protection and guidance.....
    God bless America
  • There still are many people who hate gay people. Three cheers for the great Red Sox for standing up against prejudice and small-mindedness. The Red Sox are great for offering to let Jason throw out the first pitch some day. Now I am going to be an even bigger fan of the Red Sox. Anyone who is bothered by this ought to become a Yankee fan. LOL
  • I think the RedSox should invite someone quickly, to throw out the first ball in celebration of being heterosexual. If homosexuals can't support heterosexuals and being politically correct, then to hell with the gay movement and the RedSox. The gays and RedSox don't deserve support otherwise.
  • Why in the hell is this guy being treated like a Hero.Just because he likes males. We have totally lost it.He is gay no more no less, but not courages.
  • RZ, you are not normal!
  • peaches0409, please explain. I can't wait to hear the garbage you're going to throw out. If you are gay, that's wonderful. Shout it from the rooftops. But let people voice their opinion. This is America. Free Speech and all that other good stuff.
  • Nope, sorry to disappoint you, not gay just tolerant of all people. Married for 21 years.
  • RZ...you speak for the majority of the people...no matter how politically incorrect the liberal media says you are or what the libs on here say... who we all know are never wrong.
  • YEAH....preach it baby....preach it!
  • Exactly, and need I point out that it is the Red Sox. Just gives us Yankee fans more fodder.
  • Fodder: Noun
Food, esp. dried hay or feed, for cattle and other livestock.

Yup, sounds like the Yankees. They have to keep plenty of fodder around to feed their Animals!
  • What "courage and leadership?"

This guy likes to stick his stick in other guys' butts and and likes them to do the same to him. He showered for years with athelets who were secretly what he was attracted to. So now at the end of his mediocre career he proclaims his sexual perversions as if we need to hear about that garbage.

There is absolutely nothing here remotely resembling anything to admire, nothing I would want a child to think we consider "courageous" or even acceptable.

In an effort to appear progressive, we have lost all perspective in the human qualities we consider worth celebrating.
  • I agree totally!!!!!
  • You're an obvious a$$
  • You are a complete idiot! Go crawl back in the hole from which you emerged to write your disgusting rant!
  • Thanks for your useless opinion! Now go back to your cave!!
  • That is totally not the point...doofus. In an effort to be honest Jason is confronting long held prejudices that are infecting our society. Narrow-mindedness is the worst disease anyone can have.
  • Definition of insanity: Doing the same thing, expecting a different outcome. Read history - every society that has embraced homosexuality has failed. We're insane.
Definition of homophobe: One who is too afraid of homosexuals to tell them they're wrong, and that there's a much better life for them.
  • You are absolutely correct. If they want to have a real hero throw out the first pitch, why don't they get the guy who was carjacked by the two genius terrorists and was the one that risked his life to flee the car and alert police. Without that courageous act they might never have gotten the two creeps. I suspect Collins has come out so that when he retires he can write a book and tell us all about his rainbow colored life. Hero? I think not. Let's not forget he was "engaged" to a woman and lying to her for 8 years. There's a model we want our sons to emulate.
  • Are they going to have a gay catching...
  • I have no problems with this guy being gay, but why is everyone in such a hurry to make him a hero? There are number of more deserving people just from the terrible bombing at the Boston Marathon to have the honor of throwing the first pitch.
  • The Red Sox have done that already.
  • A pervert comes out the closet, and now that makes him a hero, only in America.
  • You don't even know what the definition of the word "pervert" means. Pervert means twisted which is the way you think.
  • Let someone pitch to him..oppss already happened
  • I like my wife dress up in a french maid's dress and hanging in swing, does this make me courageous too.
Soldiers fighting in afghanistan, Astronauts going to the moon, Martin Luther King king marching in Mississsipi are courageous. Man having sex with another man is not courageous. Wonder why American is falling back
  • I am a huge Red Sox fan but am extremely disappointed with this tweet by the organization. Every comment so far is spot on. We do not need to salute this guy who obviously did not obtain the attention he craved when he was an athlete. Very sad day for a great organization. Boo!
  • Career -- 713 476 20.8 0.410 0.226 FT%0.647 1.3 2.5 RPG 3.8 0.9 0.5 0.5 0.84 2.84 PPG 3.6
Not exactly a stellar player. it is strange that he is pictured on the Celtics when he is not currently playing for the Celtics. Considering he played 32 games/300 minutes on the Celtics out of 714 games in his career.
  • Thanks, folks, for the snarky comments. Most of them reinforce WHY he was brave in coming out.
  • What's brave about it? WHY do athletes, politicians, singers and such all feel the need to announce their sexual preferences to the world?
I have no problem with this guy being gay, but it's really none of my or the public at larges business.
I can see telling your family and close friends.
    But this is ridiculous.
  • Because celebrities have a far reaching impact on society. Any time we discriminate against people because of their sexuality, or their color, or their gender, or what ever, it is everyone's business. And it must stop.
  • Yes, exactly! Thank you.
  • You people disgust me with your posts. Seriously youtoo, people that are gay are perverts? You are a bigot and have no place in society. Gay people don't lust after every person of the same sex. I commend Jason Collins, it was very courageous to be honest about his sexuality. I am sure he has had to deal with close minded morons like you geniuses posting about how it's "sick" to be gay. Grow up!
  • It is ridiculous to consider this pervert fudge packer courageous!! You and the liberal media love to see this corruption in society so that your sick agendas can move forward. The only reason he came out was for attention (he never got on the court) and to hopefully find another pervert playing ball that may want to get it on with him.
  • You are an idiot!
  • WOW how far up your.....did you have to go to dig that one out? You are really brilliant. NOT!
  • First of all if you abide by the law and the constitution of the United States, everyone belongs within society. Second, this is a free county. If people want to express their opinions because they just don't believe in homosexuality, this is their right as an American. With that said, it is not alright to push your own agenda on someone and call them “narrow-minded” for just being honest with themselves. Do I believe this guy is a hero? The answer is no. The liberal media loves to over romanticize stories such as this all the time. Maybe peaches is it you who is being pedantic.
  • Pure Garbage!
  • I hope that none of you bigots are from Boston. We accept, no haters allowed.
  • The courage is due to having to listen to people like you!!
  • I cant believe how much our so-called American society has degenerated, I can hardly take the news anymore, A HERO is the Iraq war vets, Afghanistan war vets, VietNam war vets, THE FIRST RESPONDERS TO BOSTON BOMBINGS!!!
  • Exactly. My idea of a hero is a person who goes into battle, or into a raging fire and saves people.
This has nothing to do with bravery at all. It's simply a new media hype. All for publicity.
  • The real heroes are the men and women fighting and dying to keep this country free--not some gay basketball player who gets paid big bucks to play a game. The Red Sox need to get a grip on reality. It is disgusting where this nation is heading in celebrating deviant behavior and sin against God.
  • All of these people put there lives on the line and not hardly so much as a thanks from any BUFFOON media outlets, but a gay comes out and the whole nation is supposed to bow down to their knees, WTF, it is hopeless
  • let me guess - a fastball?.... nah - how about a splitter? nope....a curve? unlikely.....a change-up? yeah, that's the ticket
  • Maybe the Red Sox would like Collins and his buddyboy to perform Sodomy on the pitchers mound
  • Courage is the issue here. It is not about sexuality.
  • why: all he did was tell the truth after lying for many years
  • Tebow get frowned apon for praying before each game and everytime he does something good because God gave him the athletic ability to do it. Yet this guys a 'hero' because he likes other men. This country is falling apart, It's just plain pitiful!
  • Maybe the Red Sox should consider letting the guy who found the dirt-bag hiding in his boat and involved in the Boston Bombing throw out the first pitch because that was more heroic than coming out of the closet!
  • This is sad that they have to mention that he is gay. It's like we as a society are Idolizing the fact that a gay person is doing something in the spotlight. It speaks of these times in the Bible and I hope and pray that we can wake up and quit idolizing these sinful behaviors. Equality is one thing, but to go against God well if we keep doing it we will find out. My prayers for the organization and that this man may find Jesus!!
  • The nice thing about God is that he loves everyone and he died for our sins. Being gay is not a sin. It is how God made us. He made each of us in his own image. Please read your bible and maybe attend a bible study or two....
  • homosexuality in the bible is forbidden....even though I am not religious but i've read the bible. please do your research :) The Bible consistently tells us that homosexual activity is a sin (Genesis 19:1-13; Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9). Romans 1:26-27 teaches specifically that homosexuality is a result of denying and disobeying God. When people continue in sin and unbelief, God “gives them over” to even more wicked and depraved sin in order to show them the futility and hopelessness of life apart from God. 1 Corinthians 6:9 proclaims that homosexual “offenders” will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Well I did your research for you. :)

  • What an incredibly disingenuous story. Who are the "Boston Red Sox?" Are we to assume that everyone employed by the Red Sox accepts homosexuality? Is it those who own the team? The agenda for the advancement of this perversion is so crystal clear, and anyone who stands in the way will get steamrolled. We are in the age where professional sports franchises will publicly endorse sexual preferances...really? Do us all a favor Boston Red Sox please, stick to running a ball team and get out of the social engineering arena!
  • I played the straight game for over a quarter of a century. 2 failed marriages and 3 great kids later. I new all along I was gay. But with the narrow views of society I am too afraid to come out. The only people who know about me are me, God and my partner. My partner is out and I have seen the problems she has had to endure when people find out that she is gay. Living in a state that just passed gay marriage gives me hope of someday being able to let the whole world see the love that I have for my wonderful partner. So may I find the strength to be proud of who I am and hats off to Jason for coming out. You are a true hero and not a bad ball player either. And yes I am a wizards fan.
  • REALLY,REALLY the Red Sox could't find anyone of good MORAL fiber to throw out the first pitch...DAMN how low has this country sunk that we hve know real hero's anymore that we have to have gay's doing what real men should be doing ,this is such a shame..what's next the marathon bomber singing the national anthem....GOD HELP US ALL...GOD PLEASE BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!
  • And why would you have a basketball player throw a pitch in a baseball game? This is so ridiculous.
  • anyone upholding this guy as a hero is an idiot!!I guess the media has chnged the meaning of the word hero just like they did the word gay!!
  • What a brave man, he is a great role model b/c he is gay. Sick
I would think he would turn the offer down b/c they just want to be treated the same right?
  • But I'm sure he's gonna look FABULOUS!
  • The vitriolic hate and offensive jokes expressed here are the very reasons it took courage for Mr. Collins to be honest about who he is. His coming out dispells a lot of myths and stereotypes about same gender loving (gay) people. When you think about it, gay teens are three times more likely to commit suicide. High school students hear on average, 25 gay put downs or jokes a day. This could impact the lives of many in a positive way (including Mr. Collins himself). Research shows that when you know some one different from you, someone who belongs to an oppressed group you become less prejudice. I look forward to the day when being in the closet if frowned upon the same way being out is today.
  • Why is this a headliner?
Where is the headliner about the National Day of Prayer?
God forbid we mention the "GOD" word in public!
    Jesus is my true hero!
Jesus loves us all as we are but asks us to continue to walk closer to him,..to remain in him.
I pray for all humanity to walk closer with God.
  • There are many great homosexuals to which we owe some of the greatest advancement on Earth. DaVinci, the greatest genious ever comes to mind. I am not gay. I am a married man with 3 professional children. I am a retired Veterinarian. Have you study Genetics? Have you ever wonder what sex your children can be? As long as each of us, regardless of our sexual preferences remain within the boundaries of the law there is nothiing to be afraid of. Martina Navratilova is gay, Helen DeGeneres is gay and so was Alexander the Great Gay. If you look in Wikipedia under famous gays you will found thousands, THOUSANDS, of them. You are just a macho man like many that are in jail. The way you express yourself describes who you are. Please, let me know in what list of accomplished people you appear.
Today, lesbigaytrans people are making contributions in every branch of the physical, social, natural, engineering, and computer sciences. Many noted scientists of the past have also had extended homoerotic or homosexual relationships throughout portions or all of their lives. Some examples are: Sir Francis Bacon, S. Josephine Baker, Allan Cox, Neil Divine, Alexander von Humboldt, Sonja Kovalevsky, Margaret Mead Florence, Louise Pearce Jim Pollack, Alan Turing, Leonardo da Vinci, Bruce Voeller Clyde Wahrhaftig
  • Are they going to have a ho week in Boston this year as well? Maybe they could honor some ho's by have one throw out a ball as well. Idiots.
  • Wow!! I am ashamed to be on the same planet as some of you people. Homophobia, like bigotry and sexism, is rooted in insecurity, ignorance and religious dogma. Do us all a favor, build a bridge and GET OVER IT!
  • I guess its been pre-determined he is a pitcher and not a catcher!
  • DAMN DRDan you beat me to it lol well played lol.
  • Alright guys, everyone here is so concerned with the use of "Hero" and "Courage" in reference to Jason Collins. Let's take a look at their definitions, according to Merriam- Webster Dictionary (Quick background: Merriam-Webster began in the 18th century with Noah Webster, who compiled the first dictionary of the American language. http://www.merriam-webster.com/info/faq.htm)

    Definition of HERO:
    1. a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability
    2. an illustrious warrior
    3. a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities
    4. one who shows great courage
    5. the principal male character in a literary or dramatic work
    6. the central figure in an event, period, or movement
    7. an object of extreme admiration and devotion : idol

    Definition of COURAGE:
mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty

Sure, Jason is no illustrious warrior or a legendary figure of divine descent. Regardless of your political stance, views, or beliefs, Mr. Collins is a "central figure in an event, period, or movement."

This "event" is Jason Collins speaking about his life, and being the first person EVER in an American major team sport to do so on this topic.

Why is this news? Tabloids headlines don't feature professional athletes being "straight." Mr. Collins came forward, at a point in his career when he is tied to no specific team, and openly spoke about who the person he is.

When society views certain human characteristics as weak, unfavorable, or "unnatural," as some of you have above, there is beyond reason for any person with those characteristics to remain quiet, avoiding embarrassment and degradation from others around him/her.

Why has he been coined a "hero?" Simply because he represents a harmless, non-violent group of society that has been looked down on, demeaned, and even tortured in this country. He is not embarrassed of who he is. That makes him a leader, a figure... a hero. A hero to those, regardless of sexual orientation, race, background, belief or religion, that have ever felt afraid to be who they are.
  • This is starting to get stupid. This guy is being made out to be some kind of a hero. I could care less what his sexual preference is. I don't understand it and it wouldn't be something for me but if it makes him happy so be it. I just don't think people should be treating him like he is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
