From Larry Brown Sports:

High school senior David Denson might not be one of the top prospects in the country, but it’s hard to imagine a teenager having more power than him.

Denson, who turns 18 on January 17, hit a 515-foot home run at Marlins Park during the 2012 Power Showcase. DPL Baseball says Denson hit 19 home runs in the showcase, including three off the scoreboard. The showcase’s website says Denson won the home run derby with his 19 blasts.

Denson is 6-foot-4 and weighs 252 pounds. He is listed as a first baseman and pitcher, and he throws 90 mph according to his profile. The South Hills High (Calif.) senior is committed to play college ball at the University of Hawaii.

For reference, Bryce Harper received attention for hitting a 502-foot home run at the same event at Tropicana Field in 2009. Both players were using metal bats. Here’s video of Harper’s blast:

  • Yes, it's a long distance but they don't use metal bats in the pros. Let's comapare apples to apples. Try it with a wooden bat. And then, let's see what a pro (of the same build) could do with a metal bat.
  • EXACTLY!
  • Someone like Ryan Howard or Adam Dunn can hit 650 ft home runs with metal bats.
  • Damn, the kid is 17 and noone said he was a pro. Can't you just say that it's impressive and move on?
  • He used a BBCOR bat dude. ...about the same as wood
  • not even close to the same as an all wood bat
  • Very impressive, unless this is just a one time fluke. My question is...If this young man really is that good, out of all the baseball powerhouse colleges in California, 9 of them ranked higher in Div. 1, how did they let this young man go to Hawaii? I would love to know how or why this happened?
  • Thisn is just like the long drive contest in golf. just becuase you can hit it with BP pitching does not mean you can do it in a game.
  • We were at this event. The 515ft home run was hit with a BESR bat. During the HR derby each player had 10 outs with wood bats and 15 with BESR metal. I can tell you that this kid was hitting 400+ HRs with the wood bat. One traveling close to 450ft. It was very impressive and fun to watch.

Teen Blasts a 515-Foot Home Run at Power Showcase

South Hills (Calif.) senior and Hawaii commit David Denson won the Power Showcase in Miami last month by blasting 19 home runs, including one that was even more ridiculous than the scoreboard at Marlins Park. Yes, Denson was using an aluminum bat, but the 6-foot-4, 252-pound first baseman launched his longest homer 515 feet and knocked three more off the scoreboard. If you remember...

ZiPS looks at the 2013 Washington Nationals Projections It’s never too early to start looking at ZiPS projections, and somehow during those two dead weeks of the holidays we forgot to throw this up on the site. The one thing I don’t like about ZiPS is it isn’t quite as optimistic as good ol’ Bill James, but it often offers a more realistic snapshot of what you’re likely...
