New Jersey native Todd Frazier changed his walk-up at-bat music to the theme song from “The Sopranos” on Thursday in honor of actor James Gandolfini, who died on Wednesday at the age of 51.

Frazier, who played on the Toms River team that won the 1998 Little League World Series and later starred at Rutgers, announced his intention to honor Gandolfini well before Thursday’s Cincinnati Reds-Pittsburgh Pirates game.

Frazier later tweeted a picture of The Star-Ledger’s cover, which featured an article on Gandolfini:

Frazier went 1-for-3 in the Reds’ 5-3 loss to the Pirates. Respect to him for the thoughtful gesture.

Video: Watch Jay Bruce blast game-tying home run

Your browser does not support iframes. Jay Bruce came through in a big way Wednesday night. The Reds All-Star right fielder stepped to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning against Pirates closer Jason Grilli and promptly delivered his 14th home run of the season. The first-pitch blast couldn't have come at a better time as it effectively tied the game at one...

Todd Frazier Is Stepping It Up

After a somewhat quietly impressive rookie season, Todd Frazier was enduring a bit of a sophomore slump until about a week ago. He started off the season off but plateaued at around six home runs despite hitting in one of the best ballparks in the league and hitting in one of the best lineups as well. It is unfortunate that Dusty Baker refuses to hit Frazier ahead of Joey Votto and...

Reds have a rough eight-game road trip ahead of them

CINCINNATI The subject of the Cincinnati Reds record this season against teams with winning records was broached and manager Dusty Baker reacted as if somebody had stolen his toothpicks and wrist bands. What the hell, he said with a shake of his head. Baker was told that the talk emanated mostly from Twitter and Facebook and he said, Social media. Its one of the worst things ever...

How quickly things can change

CINCINNATI Its amazing what one swing of the bat can do for a team in a game. And to a column. This was the lead I had ready to go with one out in the ninth inning of Wednesdays Reds game with the Pirates: The Reds are in a collective offensive funk. That perspective shifted when Jay Bruce took Pittsburgh closer Jason Grilli 417 feet deep into the Great American Ball Park seats...

Rough road trip begins tonight in Arizona

Johnny Cueto didn't appear to feel any effects from a nagging shoulder injury his last time out, but that hasn't prevented Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker from keeping a close eye on his ace. Cueto could further alleviate Baker's concerns with another solid performance against the host Arizona Diamondbacks as the teams begin a three-game series Friday night. In his...

D-backs look to get bats going against Reds

After a sweep at the hands of the Padres, the Diamondbacks got back in the win column with a little home cooking earlier this week, taking two of three games from the Marlins to maintain a 1 12-game lead atop the NL West. But the lead appears a bit precarious for a couple reasons. First, the D-backs have not had a starting pitcher win a game since June 5, a span of 13 starts. Part...

Game 74: Pirates 5, Reds 3

Bruce’s home run trot doesn’t look like the running of a man on fire, and yet. (AP Photo/Al Behrman) The Pirates took the game and split the four game series last night by winning 5-3. It was Homer Bailey leading the charge from the pitching mound, and he performed admirably. In 6.0 innings of work he allowed 2 runs on 6 hits and no walks. He struck out 8. It was Alfredo Simon...

Bruce's HR ties it, Reds beat Pirates 2-1 in 13

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Jay Bruce ended Jason Grilli's saves streak with a solo homer in the ninth, and Brandon Philips singled with the bases loaded in the 13th inning on Wednesday night, rallying the Cincinnati Reds to a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Derrick Robinson and Shin-Soo Choo singled off Vin Mazzaro (3-2) with one out in the 13th and Joey Votto was walked intentionally...

D-backs throttle Cueto, Reds

Paul Goldschmidt homered twice and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cincinnati Reds 11-5 Friday night in Johnny Cueto's worst outing in three seasons. Goldschmidt drove in three runs to raise his NL-leading RBI total to 65. Gerardo Parra hit a leadoff home run for Arizona and Jason Kubel tied his career high with four hits. Kubel doubled in a run and scored twice. Cueto ...

Offense explodes as Diamondbacks make statement with bats

What a change of pace it was for the Arizona Diamondbacks as they erupted for 11 runs on 15 hits in the series opener against the Reds Friday, toppling them 11-5.

Game 73 Preview: Pirates vs. Reds

Pirates (42-30) at Reds (44-29) 12:35 PM–Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Pirates will look for a series split this afternoon before they leave Cincinnati. Last night’s loss was a tough one for several reasons – not the least of which is the fact that nearly the entire bullpen was used, and it will probably be needed again today. The odds aren’t...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds – Game 72

Something weird happened yesterday.  Since last season I’ve seen this idiotic refrain screamed loudly by the “smart” fans and bloggers, “I’d rather retaliate by winning the game”.  As if those two things couldn’t possibly be done at the same time.  Yesterday proved that.  The strawman was destroyed. Besides, if intentionally hitting batters led to losses…

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds – Game 73

Womp womp womp.  I guess games like that are bound to happen when you only score one run but two outs away from a win and not only did the Pirates lose but they destroyed the bullpen. Some great defense will basically be forgotten due to how this game played out.  Pedro Alvarez was atrocious…

Kansas football Twitter favorites 'fire Weis' tweet

There’s a decent sized contingent of Kansas football fans who want Charlie Weis to be fired.  The Jayhawks’ coach is 5-21 through two-plus seasons in Lawrence and is off to a 1-1 start this fall.  Kansas football’s official Twitter account is apparently in favor of Weis getting canned, too. The account favorited a tweet this afternoon that called for Weis to be fired.  ...
