Pete Rose is no longer the all-time hits leader. Well, according to Topps. It doesn’t seem that like the baseball card company was only printing the biggest baseball card in the world to get a little pub, as they are actually changing history as well. ChicagoSideSports.com’s Rob Harris has a keen eye to go along with his avid love of baseball cards. He was looking at the back of the new cards for 2013 and saw a new feature that is labeled “Career Chase.” It’s meant to show just how far off each an every player is from the career total of the record holders. It seems like all the totals are listed with who holds the career records, except for all-time hits, which is held by Pete Rose. Topps has taken it upon itself to omit Rose’s name from the record, even though his baseball banishment happened well after his playing days. And even though Rose hasn’t been elected to the Hall of Fame, wrongly, the museum still recognizes him as the record holder. On the back of each card, wedged between each player’s personal information and his “Complete Major and Minor League Batting Record,” there’s a little line labeled [...]

  • Obviously Topps has no balls to play with! Taking lessons from the wrong political party!
  • Right on, will Topps now be doing that with half a dozen other records with those having used of PEDS ...? Wow, these folks at Topps have way to much time on their hands. Its a card for goodness sakes.
  • I am eliminating Topps cards from my household.
  • Seriously? The man legitimately achieved those records. Today, you have athletes using performance enhancing steroids to achieve their records. Let's make sure to acknowledge them. Personally, I don't care for what I know of Pete Rose, but as an athlete he was amazing! I disagree with this decision.
  • I have so many Topps cards that my son and I have collected over the last 50 years but there will be no more...be it what it is Pete Rose is still the all time hit leader and it will be there down fall
  • Wow, how sad. His gambling didn't affect any game he coached. This is unfortunate when you look at the Pro Football Hall of Fame and see all of the convicts who have been convicted of crimes such as wife beating, drug use and rape. (Lawrence Taylor)
  • Shame on you! This guy gave me more pleasure then and since he was was too harshly punished!
  • I'm so fed up with the politcal correctness that is ruining this country. The Topps decision is a perfect example. There are so many other athletes that use drugs, alledgedly rape women, use PED's, gamble in dog fighthing or just gamble, or live outragous life styles. For some reason they find redemption in the press and public opinion. The decision by Topps shows the imaturity of its leadership to fully understand what America's national past time (baseball) is all about. Sad day in baseball.
  • Absolutely idiotic! Pete Rose's accomplishments as a player have nothing to do with Pete Rose the coach. Baseball needs to forgive this and move on. Sure, they can keep him banned from being part of any of the organizations, but don't ban this guy from the hall and the records books! He was a tremendous player and his feats monumental....It's a shame that this part of Pete Rose is being erased...Shame on TOPPS!
  • That makes about as much sense as trying to eleminate G.W Bush as the 43rd.president,he is the top home run hitter.
  • Topp's needs to give it a rest. Back in the day Pete Rose was the man. A hitting machine. The credit and dues are his forever. After his playing days a little bet on the horse's, a golf game, etc. what is the harm. People get a grip...
  • Pete Rose is one player who played with more aggression than most players today for a less compensation.Take him off your cards ,Charlie Hustle made his mark ,can not take that away.
  • The guy is the best...You can't take anything away from him...
    A record is a record...
It's like telling the Jury to "disregard that statement"...
  • PETE ROSE did more to help baseball than any player since he played the game . now you have players that think getting money is the most important reason to play. Anyway PETE ROSE deserves to have his baseball records to remain. barry bonds, sammy sosa, mark mcguire, any many more who also used drugs are the players that should have their records corrected if possible, or be removed. KEEP PETE ROSE'S RECORDS AS THEY ARE. TOPPS be careful of the consequences .
  • That's such a bunch of bull sh_t! Pete Rose did not kill anyone. He did not torture animals. He made a mistake plain and simple. He needs to be forgiven and given the chance to make ammends. If that dog murderer Michael Vick, who was charged, sentenced and served time in PRISON for the Cruel and sick acts he did and then gets rewarded with a multimillion dollar contract than WHY CAN'T PETE ROSE BE FORGIVEN????? Can someone please tell me????? Topps has lost my business forever.
  • Ridiculous!! I agree with all you. Why bother with Pete Rose when you have professional players cheating by using performance enhancing drugs. I think that is more serious than someone betting on them self. How can you keep their records in place when knowing drugs played an important part to their success. They should be banned from sports and they should have to pay back all the salary they had earned during those years. I love how A rod still has a contract and NY has to continue to pay him. I think if drugs were used, the contract should automatically be void. Money controls everything in Professional sports. So we'll never see any real punishment for cheating in sports. Could you imagine the MLB banning players for life like they did back in the day. They can't because if the league did it would only be taking money out of their pockets, I guess using PEDs is not consider a serious offense. lol

At least we know Pete Rose did it with his god given abilities and no one will ever be able to erase his accomplishments. Who cares if he gambled. I enjoyed watching him play baseball.

Screw you Topps! Get you priorities straight!
  • I think this is the reason why as a Baseball, Football and Basketball card collector I stayed and continue to stay away from any of the TOPPS Collectable cards. I'll just stick to Upper Deck, Bowman and Fleer whereever I can find them. TOPPS NO WAY!
  • Yes pete gambled, but he still hit the ball! Hes still a hall of famer to me.
  • I think it's about time that the Commissioner and the HOF crew reallize that what Pete Rose is accused of doing is not as bad as some of the players today that are taking muscle enhancement drugs. Come on. So, he gambled. What about some of the football players that shoot someone, beat their wives up, etc.????? They go off into the sunset as heroes. Mr. Rose earned he aoomplishments...he didn't need a drug to do it. When you saw him play, you witnessed someone putting his all into the game whether you liked the guy or not. How bad is that??? And, I certainly believe that Topps should not have taken away his records. Where do they get off?
  • Everything I have from TOPPS Will be elimanated, or Burned.
Topps, now you are at the Bottomm.
  • Topps, enough already..I guess I'll boycott Topps from now on because of thier inaccurate record keeping.
  • Give me a break Topps just sold me there last card. They allow all these roid heads to remain eligble for hall of fame, yet if you read how PETE actually gambled he placed all his bets at the beginning of the season and cashed out at the end.So there was no way he could have ever throw a game intentionally.YET all these lance armstrong roid and drug heads are allowed to remain elagable for the hall of fame.it just ain't right what kind of message are they sending..it's fine to be a drughead but not to make a few extra bucks come on.these players today are such mama's boys oops i stubbed my toe need to set out a couple games or i trashed my room or bent my bentley i need to set out a couple games.GET REAL
  • are you kidding me... Topps is being ridiculous...
first and foremost...just because he is banned from the hall of fame doesnt mean he isnt the all time hit leader... does Topps still have Bonds as the home run leader...if so they are being hypocritical ... secondly...he is banned because of something he did as a manager not a player...get over it baseball and put the greatest player in the hall
  • Topps is making a big mistake! Baseball is making a big mistake! At least he didn't use drugs to make his mark. He bet on the game....come on people.
  • Glad I never collected baseball cards. Pete Rose deserves to be in the hall of fame and keep the records that he held.
I have ben a Stl Cardinal fan since I was 4 years old but I loved watching Rose because he was always hustling and not dragging his feet like most professional athletes do these days.
Its unfortunate that non-athletes are responsible for most of the chaos in Sports. Its the money that is talking and making sports boring.
  • Sounds to me that TOPPS and the NCAA are one in the same !! Time to clean house and keep the records straight !!!
  • i totally agree Rose should be in the hall of fame. if the commish then were to be still alive today , i would think he would give him a reprieve. i believe todays commish would also if every baseball fan would boycott ballgames until he did.
  • Thinking I'm glad I quit collecting long ago and stopped watching baseball after the strike. Niether are the same as when I was a kid. Now the luster is gone, I've seen what's behind the curtain and I'm jaded. In all honesty, I don't like or agree with MLB's or Topp's decisions concerning Pete Rose, the best 'at bat' of all time, but it doesn't surprise me that they wouldn't consider what a vast majority of fans want or believe. Baseball cards use to connect people(kids) to the players and the game, now the cards are nothing more than commodities. Rose should be in the 'Hall'. And as far as I am concerned he is. I don't need to see a bust or plaque to know he's the best damn hitter in baseball ever and banning him form the Hall of Fame or cards won't change that. Topps can rot for all I care.
  • Topps company you are so screwed up. Pete Rose did this as a player not gambling. He still needs to be put into the HOF. His bets were placed far before the games were played and he did not throw a game doing this on order to get a bunch of money. I would bet you that there are a lot of players betting on games. I see no wrong for Pete gambling as long he himself threw a game in order to win money. Where is the prof?
  • Topps can stick it. Pete had done wrong, but he isn't alone. Are they getting rid of everyone that used illegal enhancing drugs too? Pete legitimately earned his records with no artificial support. I hope Topp's regrets this move in a big way!
  • What a gutless travesty. I'll not be recognizing TOPPS as a legitimate baseball card company anymore. There are PLENTY of other choices to make. Now that my son is nearing the age where he is going to be collecting cards, I'll educate him as well. TOPPS should be ashamed of themselves. (as should major league baseball)
  • Its funny when MJ can gamble, players can take steriods and be home run king? Pete, you are the man and always will be, baseball needs to take this ban off. If they can bo this to others who break the law why no you.
Baseball has hit a all time low. I will never watch another game, the fun just is not there.
  • this is sooo wrong..for crying out loud, this is so petty, taking his name off of Topps Baseball cards..get real..so Pete Rose made a mistake and gambled on his team..Michael Vick served prison time for dog fighting and he is aloud to continue playing football..Pete Rose should still be aloud to be elected into the Baseball Hall Fame because of his baseball records..
  • Really Topps!!!!!!!!!! If thats how you make cards, how about erasing Bonds HRs, Cy Youngs from Clemens and on and on. How about if Baseball takes your License away. No more Topps!!! We could erase your record.
  • It is true that Pete Rose bet on games when he was a manager. It was my understanding that he NEVER bet against HIS team. In other words it can not be questioned that his managerial decisions were made to throw a game , causing his team to lose.

He is a pompous JA of a person with a gambling sickness . I can see where he felt that if he was managing his team , they couldn't lose .

What he did was against the rules and he has been extremely punished . The fact that the Commissioner that was in office that made the ruling against Pete had a heart attack and died has been held against him as well.

Rose was the player of his era that would take a pitch in the side , ram into a fielder to dislodge the ball or do anything it would take to win a ballgame with out regard for his body.

Topps has been on the down side for years and their decision to pretend Rose never existed won't bode well for them.
  • sure don't believe topps hasn't had there share of wrong doings, they just haven't been caught at it. all i can say is thank you to topps for supplying me with all there cards to help keep my heating bill down with all there cards i used as fire wood, nice and toasty here.
  • So I guess they gonna eliminate Bonds record too? U suck TOPPS.
All that matters is the real books in MLB. You guys are pathetic. What Pete did after his career should not affect even his HOF but whatever. We all know who the kings of HITS N HOMERUNS are and that is all that matter. TOPPS just lost a fan n most importantly a customer. Sorry asses.
  • He got the stats before the gambling thing. Still think he should be in the BHoF for his performance. This is gonna hurt Topps in the long run and also make the Pete Rose older cards more valuable to collectors. Go figure!
  • I normally don't got for commenting on news.
    But..this really P--s me off!
When I was a kid, Pete Rose was my hero and still is. What he did for baseball is still first rate in my book. Yes, he made a mistake. But look at what's out there now..PEDs, self centered egotistical money grubbers. Nothing I would call a roll model.
I collected baseball cards for over 55 years. Sadley many were destroyed years ago.
But no more. Topps and the Hall of Fame can kiss my ---
I remember buying these things with a gakky ol piece of gum..but it was for the cards My sister got the gum (nice guy aint I?).
I met Pete years and years ago. You couldn't ask for a nicer guy to be a hero. He took interest in his fans and didn't worry about the $5.00 that most got (at that time) for an autograph.

PETE, keep your head up.. Judging from the other posts. I'm not alone. The best to you!
  • Rose is a piece of donkey dung, tried to kill a catcher in a fun all-star game cheated on his wife because he thought he was entitled, thinks any thing of his has a retail value.I didn't like him when he played just because of his attitude and I like him less now,I think he should be in the hall of shame!!DUH
  • Maybe if he had taken PEDs like the others it would have been ok. Hell he'd probably be in the Hall of Fame. Pete you are and always be the greatest Red of all time. As a child growing up and Dixie Youth baseball in the 70's I wanted to catch like Johnny Bench and hit and slide like Pete Rose. I think both of them are the 2 best childhood heros any kid growing up learming to play baseball could ever ask for. Thank you both for being a great influence in my life. Besides the Hall of Fame needs you. You don't need them. God Bless You!!!
  • good!!! I love to see justice in a world where everything seems to be grey. Where right is wrong and wrong is right. A beacon that a few men still have the moral courage to do what is right and not a glorify a low life who cheated the very fabric of the game of baseball but even more so cheated on his wife and family like it was something he was entitled to do because he could play a silly game? Tops you are a great Amerrican Company and I salute you!!!!
  • Yes Pete gambled, but that was after he played as a player, you idiot. His stats can not be denied, and he did not do PEDS. What he done in his personel life has nothing to do with his baseball years
  • My Pete Rose cards' value just skyrocketed. Thanks Topps.
  • Pete Rose is a great athlete. He got caught because he is big name Pete Rose. How many athletes gamble without the big name? Topp's should research that and see how men they can erase
  • absolute ******** who gave these idiot the authority to decide it didn't happen...right no one! absolute ********!!!!!
  • He was the best of his time and the betting occurred after his actual playing career. What he did in his personal life is his own business and I am sure he was not the only athlete cheating on their wife. Topps you have got this all wrong, shame on you.
  • Then Topps better erase Mark McGuire, Roger Clemons, A-Rod, and anyone else that had anything to do with STEROIDS. Pete Rose bet on baseball., but he didnt do anything that increased his ability to hit the ball. All of the aforementioned were using steroids to CHEAT baseball. Its not the same and Pete should be in the HOF. People at Topps, your a bunch of jerks.
  • OK...everyone relax a bit. This is just typical yardbarker bad journalism. They are not rewriting history. When i started reading this, based onthe sensationalist headline, I figured they were still listing Ty Cobb as the leader so saying that a player was just #### hits away from 4189. But they are not doing that. They simply are not naming Pete Rose...becuase contractually, according to their deal with MLB, they are not ALLOWED to.

Sure...the better thing to do would be to not name ANY of the leaders. Just say someone is #### amount of wins away from 511 without naming Cy Young. Then it would be consistent. But really, the one to blame is MLB for not allowing his name to be used at all. Except when it means money for them.
  • You cannot erase a mans life for 1 mistake. He was retired anyway! BOYCOTT ALL TOPPS PRODUCTS!!!
  • Who the hell is Topps to make a decision like that when the Hall at least recognizes Rose as the all time hits leader. Shows what kind of class they have to eliminate Rose and still show a--hole Barry Bonds as the home run king. Not only the steroid issue but the fact that everyone who ever met the man hates him. He achieved his record by cheating, took the money, and walked away and thumbed his nose at the game. whereas Pete made a mistake after his playing days but even though banished he is still respects the game and is the biggest promoter of the game out there. This past Christmas I bought my grandson his first pack of Topps baseball cards for a stocking stuffer but I am sorry I did and it will be his last pack.
  • It's time to put Pete into the Hall of Fame. He paid for his crime and did the time. He's an America Hero!
  • One cannot take the wins away from Joe Paterno and one cannot take the hits away from Pete Rose.
  • Seriously?? I don't remember Pete Rose "The Player" ever being convicted or accussed of any crime? Oh, that's right, he wasn't!! Even the crime he committed pales in comparison to the sabatoge the PED Boys have brought to the game. Topps has chewed too much of their own gum, perhaps they should now swallow it!
  • I agree it's time to forgive Pete and let him in the HOF. He has done nothing to damage the game or it's integrity like so many PED players. Many say that it is his lack of integrity that is the reason he is not in the HOF. But why does the lack of integrity weigh more with voters than those players who have displayed an abundance of integrity. Because imo there are several former players that are borderline stat guys that should be voted in easily if their integrity was factored in. Look at Dale Murphy and Fred McGriff for example. Check their stats and add the integrity factor and they should be in the HOF. It is ashame that Pete is being punished so much for merely refusing to drop to his knees and beg the media for forgiveness. Who is the one the most arrogant and stubborn. Pete or the media? TOPPS is wrong. And with their reasoning how could they list Bonds as the HR leader. He's done more damage to the sport by a long shot. He actually cheated while playing. Hank Aaron is the HR leader in my book. Pete in.. Bonds out!
  • Piss on the HOF and piss on Topps! Pete Rose played harder than anyone I ever saw, being 60, I've seen quite a few. Who knows what players were doing before tests were developed to detect PED's. Who knows whether Ruth, Cobb,or Stan the man ever bet on a game? I'm still a Charlie Hustle fan, some said he is arrogant, he is, ANYONE who is that competitive and accompished what he did is. The HOF and Topps are a joke, I don't care about PED's or gambeling after his playing days, he set the record and should be recognized!
  • Pete Rose is a saint compared to todays players
  • Wrong drcision from Tops. I never ever will buy another card from that company. Pete Rose have not my sympaty because he is very arrogant; bur that has nothing to do whit his record. To me he was the best player of all times. You can't hide the sun whit one finger and to me tha's what Tops and the Hall of Fame people try to do. To me the HOF and Tops are wrong all the way and til they change they have no value at all for me. What Pete Rose did after his career was over can't erase his rcord!!!!
  • I am going through my cards and erasing all TOPPS cards. I am giving my cards to my grandson, but unfortunately all the TOPPS cards will have been burned.

I guess all companies want any kind of publicity they can get...even if it makes them look petty and foolish. I hope your company goes out of business soon.
  • You got to be kidding me, Pete Rose deserves his name on that record, he busted his ass playing hard 23 years. You are lucky if you see today's players play hard, this guy did it his whole career. TOPPS you sure screwed up bad this time, no more TOPPS cards for me!
