There's been a lot of speculation lately about whether longtime Twins manager Ron Gardenhire might be fired, some of it fueled by the club's recent slide to 39-53, some more of it fueled by esteemed Minneapolis Star-Tribune columnist Patrick Reusse's recent suggestion that maybe it's time to "put him out of his misery.'' Folks are figuring that if Reusse's suggesting, maybe someone up high must be suggesting or or even whispering loudly that Gardenhire is about to go. But that isn't necessarily the case. Reusse very well may believe exactly what he says, which is that Gardy, as he is better known in the Twins Cities and around baseball, deserves not to be suffering anymore. This is the third straight year of Twins suffering following a very nice six-year run by the Twins under Gardenhire, so it isn't necessarily an unreasonable opinion. But people connected to the team actually are suggesting that there is very little chance Gardenhire won...

Twins' All-Star Game appearances highlighted by Joe Mauer's key hit

The Minnesota Twins had two representatives in this year's All-Star Game. Only one got the chance to see the field. Catcher Joe Mauer was a starter for the American League team that won 3-0 in Tuesday's game. He was the AL's No. 8 hitter and had two at-bats before he was pulled. Closer Glen Perkins, meanwhile, did not enter Tuesday's game -- his first All-Star Game...

Twins rumors: Justin Morneau on the trading block

On Wednesday, July 15, we at MLB Injury News explained that the Twins postponed contract talks with first baseman Justin Morneau until after the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. We have learned today that Morneau has now become a potential trade candidate according to MLB Trade Rumors' Steve Adams. Adams cites ESPN Insider Jim Bowden as saying that the Twins have put Morneau...

Twins' minor leaguer Cole De Vries to get a cortisone injection

The Minnesota Twins last saw Cole De Vries in the Majors last year.  However, a return this season is not out of the question if he can get healthy.  The 28-year old pitcher is battling elbow inflammation.  He is no stranger to injuries.  He made the Opening Day roster this year, but he landed on the DL just a few days in with forearm tightness.  He has not yet returned to...

Trade Values: Justin Morneau

Jim Bowden of ESPN has some trade buzz from the All-Star week, and has the Pittsburgh Pirates included in a rumor. Unlike Bowden’s trade ideas, these are actual rumors based on what Bowden has heard. He says the Minnesota Twins are prepared to trade Justin Morneau, and has the Pirates as one of the teams rumored as a possible destination. He also lists the Yankees and Rays as possibilities...

Twins update: Perkins expects to stay, Morneau market looks soft

Twins longtime slugger Justin Morneau is available in trade and likely to be dealt somewhere, but a canvassing of a few possible landing sports suggests a soft market so far. The Twins are sellers at this point -- "If someone calls, we'll listen'' says general manager Terry Ryan -- but Twins-connected people suggest there's almost no chance they'll deal...

Twins' decisions next two weeks could reshape franchise

Seventy games remain, and the playoffs are no longer even a distant thought. Yet for the Twins, as they come out of the all-star break, there is much more at stake over these next 2 1/2 months than just trying to avoid a third straight last-place finish and loss total in the 90s. Among the determinations that must be made: WHAT ABOUT MORNEAU? Finishing out a six-year, $80 million...

Second half sellers?

“Baseball is a business” we often hear. “You can’t take it personally,” is a common utterance among players who hear their names in rumors and reports. The fierce loyalty the Twins show to their players, staff and management can either be interpreted as an organizational rejection of these precepts, or at the very least an extraordinarily conservative approach to the business...
