Detroit prospect Nick Castellanos hit a three-run homer during a nine-run sixth inning, and Royals minor leaguer Wil Myers added three RBI to lead the US team to a 17-5 rout of the World team in the All-Star Futures Game on Sunday. Billy Hamilton and Manny Machado each drove in two runs for the US team, contributing to a record 22 combined runs during the annual prospect showcase. Castellanos was the game's MVP, but it was Myers who drew the biggest reaction. The 21-year-old outfielder received a standing ovation from an adoring sellout crowd that has been pining for his arrival all season. Myers is hitting .315 with 14 homers in 48 games at Triple-A Omaha. Orioles prospect Dylan Bundy earned the win by pitching a scoreless fourth inning.

Could Justin Upton be on the Detroit Tigers radar?

The Arizona Diamondbacks have made it clear in recent days that they will entertain trade offers for their star right fielder Justin Upton. Is it possible that he’d be a fit with the Detroit Tigers and could they put together a strong enough package to make it happen? First, we must look at the D-backs’ outfield situation. If Upton were to be sent packing it would leave just...

Tigers' player does the old ball-on-a-string trick

During Sunday's Royals-Tigers game at Comerica Park, Detroit catcher Gerald Laird had a little fun by pulling the old ball-on-a-string trick with some kids hovering above the home team's dugout. Laird can be seen with a devilish grin while he played keep-away with the patient kids until one of the little dugout rats proudly snapped the souvenir from the string. It's...

Justin Verlander Dating Kate Upton? Could This Really Be Happening? Maybe.

As we told you this morning, Kate Upton was drinking in a suite at last night’s Detroit Tigers game. It turns out that suite was Justin Verlander’s suite. Yes, that Verlander guy from the MLB 2K commercials and your reigning Cy Young. A little investigating reveals that Upton in Verlander’s suite wasn’t by coincidence. These two are actually sharing some special time, according...

Source: Verlander to start for AL in All-Star Game

KANSAS CITY, MO. Justin Verlander has accrued virtually every individual honor available to a starting pitcher: a Rookie of the Year award and World Series Game 1 start in 2006; a no-hitter in 2007; Most Valuable Player and Cy Young awards, along with the second no-hitter of his career, in 2011. Tuesday, he will add yet another: a start for the American League in the All-Star Game...

2012 MLB Midseason Awards: AL Cy Young

Justin Verlander made a mockery of the American League for the majority of last season on the way to capturing 28 first place votes and taking home the Cy Young and MVP Awards. He’s firmly placed himself in the discussion through the first half of the 2012 season, but the race is much [...]

Tigers avoid collapse in ninth, top Royals

DETROIT (AP) -- Prince Fielder hit a two-run, game-tying homer in the first, Delmon Young had a two-run home run to pad the lead in the seventh inning and the Detroit Tigers held on to beat the Kansas City Royals 8-7 Saturday. Detroit closer Jose Valverde started the ninth with a four-run lead and almost lost it. Valverde walked Alex Gordon on four pitches to lead off the inning...

2012 MLB Midseason Awards: AL MVP

Last season Justin Verlander took home the American League Cy Young Award but also the MVP, becoming the first pitcher to be named AL most valuable player since Dennis Eckersley in 1992 and the first starting pitcher since Roger Clemens in 1686. I don’t have any pitchers in my top 5 candidates for [...]

8:45 a.m. ET: "It's going, going, going, it's...." Chances are you'll be hearing that phrase a lot Monday night, as Kansas City's Kauffman Stadium provides the setting for the 2012 edition of the Home Run Derby. Begun in 1985, when Dave Parker hit six home runs representing the Cincinnatti Reds at the Metrodome in a single round, the competition has become...

Futures dominate World at Kauffman Stadium

Manager George Brett had a simple message for his U.S. Team prior to Sunday's All-Star Future's Game against the World Team at Kauffman Stadium: Embarrass the World Team. "I really did tell them that," Brett said. "I think that's the attitude you have to have going into every game. You want to embarrass the other team." Mission accomplished. The...

Minor Accomplishments for Week 13

Transparency isn’t a strong suit of Major League front offices, nor should it be.  Nowhere is this fact more glaring than in the case of the Kansas City Royals and the immediate future of top hitting prospect Wil Myers.  The Royals have insisted that they’ll practice patience with Myers and let him marinate in Omaha for the duration of the season.  Meanwhile, in Jeff Francoeur...
