In Bob Geren’s first season as manager for the Oakland A’s, that was 2007, he had his pitchers issue 60 intentional walks … the most in the American League. You probably can imagine how this made me feel about Bob Geren’s managerial stylings. For some reason that year, I caught a game against Cleveland where he had his pitchers intentionally walk Trot Nixon AND Ryan Garko, same game, an intentional walk two-fer that undoubtedly sparked my regrettable “if I was owner, I would fire him in the middle of a game” baseball temper.
Now, to be fair, I should say here that it is true that Geren has not been the same Walking Manager since then. He cut down his intentional walk call quite a bit in his second year, and in Year Three he only had his pitchers issue 30 intentional walks, which was just one more than the league average.
