Smoak Bomb There can be a lot said about Justin Smoak, and most of it ever since his arrival in Seattle has been negative. There has been lots of talk about him abandoning his switch hitter status, especially since his power numbers from the right side have been downright laughable. Well that all ends now! Well it at least quells the argument until next year at least. The Mariners are done for the year. Not physically, but mentally and figuratively they have been done for a while. This time of the year can be called pre Spring Training I guess as the teams around the league get to expand their lineups with the September call-ups. Justin Smoak, like last year, is using this time on the field nicely. He really has turned it around since his return to the Mariners mid-season. I just hope that he, along with Michael Saunders, can make it a whole season with good numbers next year. Justin Smoak finally gets one from the right side. (Photo: zimbio.com) As you probably have guessed by now, this weeks segment goes to Smoak’s two-run bomb that won the game for the Mariners against the hated Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, I even hate typing that name! The homerun Sitting in a tough game that had endured two stoppages due to bee’s swarming the outfield, Smoak came to the plate with the game tied at 1 in the 6th inning with one man on. Behind in the count, Justin got an 81 MPH ball right down the middle just above the knees. Now remember, Smoak is hitting from the right side of the plate since a lefty was in. You can even hear the disbelief in Dave’s voice as the ball comes off of the bat. The ball cleared the extremely low left field wall by plenty of room and landed about 12 rows deep. He tucked it right inside the foul pole, which was probably the only thing that would’ve stopped this ball from getting out. The homer was Smoak’s 18th on the year. As much crap that is talked on this guy you can’t really argue with his end of year stats. His RBI totals need to come up a lot, but for only playing 125 games so far, 18 HRs is nothing to complain about. His average may never come up, but he wasn’t traded for to be the best average guy on the team. Time will tell what the Mariners decide to do with him, but as I see it, right now it’s either him or Jesus Montero. And I’m sure I’m not alone in saying the Smoak is the better option between those two. Here is the link to the video courtesy of Mariners.com.
