Montero Mash x2

Oh how sweet it is to beat the Angels in Anaheim. Especially off of their pride and joy Jarred Weaver.

Jesus Montero went yard not once, but twice, in the 2nd, and 6th innings respectively against Weaver.

For the Mariners slugger, it was homeruns number 11 and 12 on the year.

Even with Hector Noesi exiled to Tacoma, the Mariners are looking like the winners in the Michael Pineda trade after all, especially with Pineda not having pitched even one inning in pin stripes this year.

The first one

On a 1-1 pitch, Weaver tosses one right down the heart of the plate into Montero’s wheelhouse at 87 MPH.

Montero waited on it perfectly, cocked his leg, and put a good swing on it.

The ball didn’t clear the fence by much, but it did clear the leaping Mike Trout’s glove as it came to reside in the makeshift rock garden out in left center field.

The only bad thing about this particular homerun?

It came with the bases empty.

Such is the luck of the SS Mariner.

The second one

Another 1-1 count for Montero on this one.

And Weaver put it at almost the exact same spot, but this time he took a bit more off of it, as it only registered at 78 MPH.

Same routine; Montero waits it out, ***** his leg, and put some good wood on the ball.

This one was down the left field line, as it only cleared the foul pole by about 20 or so feet.

Landing about 13 rows deep, it appeared to be the better of the two homeruns, and it was. As this one came with a man on base.

Montero single handily put the Angels out of the game by accounting for 3 of the 4 runs scored on the day en route to a 4-1 victory.

Jesus Montero may not be a 40 homerun guy, but his pop will come as he gains more experience in the bigs.

With the catching duties most likely going to Mike Zunino in the next year and a half, if Montero wants to stick around and truly be the next great M’s DH, he is going to have to get those power numbers up a bit more.

He has been likened to a Edgar Martinez type of hitter, and though it has shown at times in spurts this year, he is nowhere close to the great Gar just yet.

It could come in time. And it better if he wants to remain a part of this team once Zunino makes the trip up to the major league club.

Smoak gets another chance with Mariners

The Seattle Mariners never quite saw first baseman Justin Smoak get it together in 2010 when the club moved starting pitcher Cliff Lee to the Texas Rangers and got Smoak in return. Last year saw Smoak get off to a good start, but family health issues took him out of the lineup for a bit, and things didn't get going after that. He was hitting .189 this year when he was sent...

Mariners Unable to Overcome Early Deficit Against Rays

Seattle Mariners starter Blake Beavan battled yet again on Monday night giving up 4 runs in 6 innings, striking out 4 and walking none. Prior to this start, Beavan had been on a roll winning 4 of his last 5 outings and only walking a whopping total of 2 batters in 34.1 innings, while striking out 24.
