Diamond in the rough

It’s hard to get excited about the Mariners after their seemingly playoff bound run has all but been extinguished.

Thought’s of ’95 will have to remain in our fondest memory bank, as we look towards next season with the glimmer of hope that we actually are getting better. Record wise that is.

A tough weekend series with Oakland didn’t supply much on the ends of what ESPN likes to call “web gems,” but what I have hear might get a least some of you excited for the Mariners outfield prospects of the future.

Michael Saunders is here to rescue us out of the dog days of summer, with a fantastic grab out of the first row of seats in left field foul territory.

If anything, this kept the ever dangerous Coco Crisp off the base paths for the time being.

The pitch

With a 2-2 count, Jason Vargas tosses a 81 mph changeup on the inside part of the plate.

Coco got out in front of this one and sent it toward the left field foul line.

A charging Michael Saunders caught flight of the ball, and like a man trying to keep his job, never lost sight of it as he raced for the left field foul territory warning track.

Saunders never slowed up, and just barely put his hand out for the wall, which he missed anyways since it is so low.

Reaching up with his glove, Saunders snatched the ball right out of the front row, trying his hardest not to be upended by the wall.

Not exactly a Jeter-esque flip over a few rows of seats and fans grab, but still a fantastic job of not only tracking the ball on a dead run, but coming up with it over the wall too.

Some poor fan now will have to buy his grandson a souvenir, as Michael Saunders surely took this one away from him.

Such is the luck of the Mariners fans. Can’t even win while watching them lose.

Sorry about all the negativity, I just thought for sure this run would hold up, and we would catch the Angels.
