The Cleveland Indians' signing of right-hander Brett Myers to a one-year contract gives the team another option for the rotation, which is clearly still a work in progress. The only two spots that are settled are the top two, which belong to Justin Masterson and Ubaldo Jimenez. Even those two spots are subject to change, given that Masterson's name has surfaced in trade rumors throughout the offseason. It would be difficult to image the Indians finding a team willing to trade for Jimenez, who has lost 30 games over the last two years, including an American League-leading 17 losses in 2012. Myers would appear to be the leading candidate for the No. 3 spot. After that, the bottom two spots in the rotation are wide open. It would seem likely that Trevor Bauer, acquired in a three-team trade earlier in the offseason, would be a strong candidate for one of those spots. Bauer, the third overall pick in the 2011 draft, made his big-league debut last season with Arizona and is viewed as a major-league-ready prospect. Bauer, however, would have to pitch well enough in spring training to merit being in the rotation on opening day. Among the other candidates for spots in the rotation: Zach McAllister, who was impressive after a midseason call-up last year; Corey Kluber, who also pitched well at times in a late-season trial; and David Huff, the only left-hander in the group, who has been up and down between Cleveland and Class AAA Columbus for most of the last three years. Carlos Carrasco, who missed all of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, also will be in the spring training mix. Two pitchers who won't be are Jeanmar Gomez, who was designated for assignment on Jan. 2 and Josh Tomlin, who will miss most, if not all, of 2013 as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.
