Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Chris Narveson didn't expect Los Angeles specialist Lewis Yocum to disagree with the first diagnosis that his torn rotator cuff would require surgery.

But one can always hope.

Instead, Yocum agreed with Brewers team physician William Raasch, and Narveson will undergo season-ending left shoulder surgery, followed by an arduous six- to-month rehab program.

"It's always a tough realization, especially when it starts to sink in and you hear what's going on," Narveson said Tuesday before the Brewers' 9-6 win over the Astros. "But at the same time, you know it's a team sport. That's why guys are here, ready to step in and help the team win."

Narveson has been through this kind of thing before. He had Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in 2002 and another procedure to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder in 2005.

Still, the timing of the latest injury couldn't have been worse. Narveson had finally established himself in a big-league rotation, going 12-9 in 2010 and 11-8 in 2011 as the Brewers' No. 5 starter. Also, he is eligible for salary arbitration for the first time after this season.

"It's all about your outlook," he said. "You have to be positive. You know it's going to be long. You know it's going to be grueling. You know there's going to be days where it aches or hurts."

Manager Ron Roenicke said right-hander Marco Estrada would remain as Narveson's replacement. Estrada started against Colorado on Saturday and pitched five strong innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out a career-high nine.
